Please take a listen to the latest episode of “Reach Out” — Mencap Liverpool and Sefton’s radio show broadcast on LCR 106.7FM, Liverpool’s only Ofsted community radio station on FM and DAB.

This latest show features two very different but equally brilliant interviews.

The first sees our member Lewis Scott interviewing his friend and neighbour Adam Whittaker — formerly “The Geg” from the Radio City Breakfast Show. Lewis and Adam have been friends for over 30 years and spend the interview sharing childhood memories, funny stories, and talking about food… lots of food! 🍔🍟🍰

For many people with learning disabilities, making and maintaining friendships can sometimes be challenging, which makes a friendship like this even more special. Thirty years later, Lewis and Adam are still great friends!

The second interview features Sue Wignall, who stepped in at the last minute to interview Sandra Duncan from The Feelgood Factory about all the fantastic things happening there. It was such an interesting and informative conversation and really highlighted the importance of community support and opportunities.

“Reach Out” exists to show that people with learning disabilities are the same as everyone else — with the same hopes, dreams, interests, humour, friendships, and ambitions.

Sometimes people may need a little more time or support, but we will get there.

Well done everyone involved in another fantastic show and thank you to the team at LCR 106.7fm for all your help and support

On Friday we were delighted to welcome Bill Esterson MP to Mencap Community Cottage to show him around and talk about the amazing things happening here every week.

Members James, Rachel HB, Matty and Amber spoke proudly about the activities, opportunities and support available at the Cottage, as well as the challenges around beibg paid to deliver Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training delivered by Experts by Experience.

We are really grateful that Bill took the time to listen to us and he has raised these concerns directly with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, alongside possible solutions that could help more people with learning disabilities to deliver this important training.

It was also lovely hearing Bill’s memories of helping at the Thursday Club Christmas Parties at the Methodist Church on Moor Lane many years ago — something several of our members still remember fondly too.

A huge thank you to Bill and his team for visiting, listening and supporting us. We always appreciate opportunities for the voices of people with learning disabilities to be heard.

🌍⚽ International Success for Alfie & ⚽🌍
A huge congratulations to Alfie and the Bootle Bucks Inclusion team, who have just returned from an incredible week in Italy competing in an international football tournament! 🇮🇹
The team did themselves proud, finishing 2nd place in the Castellareno Special Cup 🏆🥈 an amazing achievement against strong competition.
Alfie, who plays on the wing, played a fantastic role throughout the tournament and even got on the scoresheet with a brilliant goal! ⚽👏
Alfie shared how proud he is of the whole team, saying they played amazingly and we couldn’t agree more!
👏 Massive well done to Alfie and all the players, you have done yourselves, your team, and everyone back home proud!

💙 It’s not always work, work, work at Mencap Liverpool and Sefton! 💙

Between all of the amazing projects, training, meetings, radio shows, and activities we have going on, it’s always lovely when our members get the chance to simply spend time together and have a catch-up 😊

Yesterday, some of our members met up in town for lunch, a chat, and a chance to enjoy each other’s company 🍽️✨

Sometimes the small moments are just as important — friendship, connection, laughter, and feeling part of the community.

We love seeing the friendships that continue to grow through Mencap Liverpool and Sefton 💙

🚆🌊 This week, Rachel travelled by train to Folkestone to deliver Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training alongside the wonderful Tracey Richards from National Mencap

Tracey trained our members to become qualified co-trainers just over a year ago, so it was lovely for Rachel to catch up with her again 💙

Rachel stayed in a hotel by the sea and had hoped for an early morning beach walk before training — but the wet weather had other ideas this time! Maybe next visit, Rachel 🌧️🌊

The training session went really well, and Rachel is now delivering a couple of sessions each month and growing in confidence every time she delivers 👏

Afterwards, Rachel travelled up to London to spend some time with family, enjoy dinner together, and have a catch-up before heading back to Liverpool.
This training is about so much more than delivering sessions. As well as raising awareness and helping improve the lives of people with learning disabilities, it is also opening up the world to our members — travelling independently, staying in hotels, meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, and experiencing new places.

For many people without a learning disability, this is simply everyday life. It should be the same for people with a learning disability too 💙

A huge well done to Rachel — we are so proud of everything you are achieving! 👏✨

A huge well done to our amazing Sue, who stepped in at the very last minute on Monday to interview Sandra Duncan, CEO of the Feelgood Factory, for our next edition of “Reach Out” on LCR 106.7FM

Sue did an EXCELLENT job and we are so proud of her!

Thank you to Sandra for a brilliant interview and to Steve Faragher for producing the shows and supporting everyone involved.

Working with organisations across Liverpool and Sefton through Reach Out is so important. It helps our members learn about opportunities in the community, promotes the voices of people with learning disabilities, and supports our brilliant local radio station too.

It’s all about connection, partnership working and communities supporting each other

👏 A lovely community moment from last weekend! 👏

Our wonderful Paul completed his 37th Parkrun on Saturday 🏃‍♂️🎉 and bumped into Anthony, one of our regular Saturday morning visitors to Coffee at Mencap at our beautiful Mencap Community Cottage ☕💙

It’s always fantastic to see friendships and connections continuing outside of our sessions, and we’re so proud of Paul’s achievement!
Great work, Paul — and lovely to see you, Anthony. We look forward to seeing you back at the coffee shop tomorrow! 😊

What a lovely catch-up session our Outreach Champions had after a busy few weeks!

Our members have been involved in so much amazing work — from meeting with Peter Dowd MP and National Mencap to discuss the barriers around being paid to deliver Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, to raising awareness at Bootle Strand and presenting at the Liverpool Community Health Conference.

One important message from the conference was the need for more people to be on the Learning Disability Register so people can access annual health checks, longer appointments and flu vaccinations. If you think you or someone you know should be on the Learning Disability Register, speak to your GP practice.

We also talked about upcoming cancer screening consultation work, continuing conversations with MPs across Liverpool and Sefton, and exciting new Reach Out radio recordings coming soon!

So proud of the incredible work our members continue to do using our lived experiences to create change.
