Some tattoos are just designs. This one is 900 years old.
The Urnes style comes from 11th century Norway β a beast and a serpent wound around each other, order and chaos locked in the same knot. You can still see the original carved into the doorway of Urnes Stave Church, and it hasn't stopped moving in nine centuries.
No straight lines anywhere in it. Every line curves back into itself, and that's exactly what makes it one of the hardest Norse styles to tattoo properly. Get the flow wrong and the whole piece dies.
Henry has been tattooing for over 20 years and Norse work is where he's most at home. If you've been thinking about a Viking or Nordic piece, come and talk it through with us.
