One of the biggest challenges of delivering homecare in West Lothian? Transport. 🚌
People often talk about recruitment in social care, but there’s another challenge that doesn’t get talked about enough — getting carers from one client to the next.
West Lothian is spread across different towns and villages. A carer may be available and willing to work, but without a car, moving between areas can be extremely difficult, especially when visits are time-sensitive.
This affects more than the business. It can affect continuity of care, staff hours and how efficiently we can build care runs.
For example, if a non-driving carer has several clients within one area and one care package ends, replacing those hours isn't always straightforward.
There may be available work elsewhere in West Lothian, but the carer simply can't get there efficiently by public transport.
That means we increasingly need to recruit drivers, not because non-drivers aren't good carers, but because of the geography and transport limitations of community-based care.
Sometimes the challenge isn't finding someone who wants to care.
It's getting a great carer to the person who needs them. 💚
