Opening to the Light - A summer reflection on sunlight, mood, and gentle seasonal practice
Summer arrives with a quiet invitation: to soften, to open, and to let the returning light steady us from the inside out. As the days stretch long across the valley and the air warms, we’re reminded that wellbeing doesn’t always come from doing more, often, it comes from allowing more light in. This season encourages expansion, but in a way that feels spacious rather than rushed. It’s a time to reconnect with the simple rhythms that nourish us.
The Science of Sunlight & Mood - Sunlight is one of the most powerful natural regulators of our emotional and physical health. When natural light enters the eyes — even on a cloudy day — it signals the brain to adjust the circadian rhythm, the internal clock that governs sleep, mood, digestion, and energy.
Morning light is especially potent. It gently suppresses melatonin, lifts cortisol to healthy daytime levels, and supports clearer focus and steadier alertness throughout the day. Exposure to natural light also boosts serotonin, the neurotransmitter linked to mood, calmness, and emotional balance. This is why even a short walk in early daylight can shift how grounded we feel for the rest of the day.
In summer, when light is abundant, we have a natural opportunity to support our wellbeing — not by filling our days, but by aligning with the season’s gentle rhythm. Light helps regulate the nervous system, stabilise sleep, and create a sense of inner spaciousness. When we meet it with presence rather than urgency, it becomes a quiet form of nourishment.
A Seasonal Practice: The Morning Light Ritual
A simple, grounding practice for the season of long days.
Duration: 3–5 minutes
Best time: Within the first hour of waking
Step outside or stand by an open window.
Let natural light reach your eyes (no sunglasses for the first minute if comfortable).
Take three slow breaths.
Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth, letting the shoulders soften.
Notice the quality of the light.
Warm or cool, bright or gentle — simply observe without analysing.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Allow the body to settle into a sense of steadiness.
Set a quiet intention for the day.
Something simple: “Move with ease”, “Stay open”, “Let the light guide me”.
This small ritual helps regulate your circadian rhythm, supports mood, and creates a moment of calm before the day begins — a summer practice that feels both grounding and expansive.
