DOES YOUR THERAPIST KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PIGMENTATION & MELASMA? 👀
Not all pigmentation is the same — and treating it as though it is can be a mistake.
As a Skin Specialist, I see clients who have been treating what they believe is ordinary pigmentation, when the pattern and presentation may actually be melasma.
And that distinction matters.
🔎 Pigmentation can have many causes, including sun exposure, inflammation, acne, injury and hormonal changes.
🤎 Melasma typically presents as symmetrical, irregular patches of brown or grey-brown pigmentation, commonly across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and sometimes the jawline. Hormones, UV exposure, visible light and heat can all play a role.
So why is recognising the difference so important?
Because melasma needs a carefully considered approach.
Treating every dark patch aggressively as simple pigmentation isn’t necessarily appropriate. Some treatments — particularly those that create excessive heat or inflammation — may aggravate melasma in susceptible skin.
Before reaching for a peel, laser or other corrective treatment, your practitioner should be looking at:
✨ The pattern of pigmentation
✨ Where it appears on the face
✨ Whether it is symmetrical
✨ Your hormonal and medical history
✨ Sun and heat exposure
✨ Previous treatments and how your skin responded
✨ Your skin type and overall skin health
Good skin treatment starts with understanding what you’re actually treating.
If you’ve been trying to tackle stubborn pigmentation that keeps returning, it may be time to look a little deeper.
At Carol Turnell Cozmetic Skin Clinic, my focus is always on assessing the skin first and creating an appropriate, personalised treatment plan.
DON’T JUST TREAT THE COLOUR. UNDERSTAND THE CAUSE. 🤎
