On Tuesday 15th September the 3rd Annual South Wales Acquired Brain Injury Forum conference will take place at the Hugh James offices in central Cardiff.

This year the theme is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a complex and widely misunderstood condition with symptoms that include sensory, motor, and cognitive impairment, along with functional seizure activity.

There are estimated to be around 8000 new diagnoses per year in the UK but a lack of high-quality data, potential underdiagnosis and variable coding means the prevalence could be much higher.

There is a packed programme of speakers that includes:

➡️ Dr Elizabeth Mallam, Consultant Neurologist with a special interest in FND.

➡️ Dr Michelle Gregory a Clinical Psychologist with lived experience.

➡️ Rachel Wallbank (OT and AHP Lead) and Jennifer Roe (Physiotherapist) of the Cardiff and Vale Health Board 'Live Well' Service, a non- specialist FND service, supporting a range of conditions, will describe the challenges they face, their approach, alongside case studies, that demonstrate the impact of this condition.

➡️ Totus Rehabilitation Neuropsychologists, Emma Hale and Jess Carter, will share case studies and examples of formulations for clients with FND.

➡️ Mark Robinson, Partner in the Hugh James Serious Injury Team, will give a legal perspective using case studies to demonstrate the unique challenges FND brings to a compensation claim; misdiagnosis, causation, recognition and the importance of collaboration.

➡️ Dr Claire Williams, Associate Professor in Neuropsychology, Swansea University will chair a panel discussion that we anticipate will generate lots of questions.

The team supports Aron each week to get out into his community, helping him build confidence and engage in activities that bring him genuine enjoyment.

Whether it's preparing food, going shopping, watching trains, or simply spending time in the park chatting with passers-by, every achievement represents meaningful progress towards a more independent and fulfilling life.

At Case Management Cymru, we are incredibly proud of the positive difference our support teams make every day.

One young man we support, Aron, lives with a severe brain injury, significant anxiety, and profound mobility challenges. Prior to receiving support, accessing his community and pursuing the activities he enjoys was extremely difficult. Today, thanks to a dedicated, well-managed, and highly committed support team, Aron is achieving goals that promote both his independence and wellbeing.

We'll be sharing more about Aron's journey over the next couple of weeks.

Today though, we thought we'd share a video of Aron taking part in some carpool karaoke, singing a Black Sabbath song - 'Paranoid' 🤘 🎸 We LOVE this Aron!!

Case management is a very varied role, all centred around supporting clients to meet their personal goals.

For these two lovely ladies, social meet ups are high up on the list and having friends with common interests, hobbies and experiences is paramount for them both. Their case manager identified a potential for a lasting friendship and they recently met up for the second time!

It is hoped that their friendship will develop as they plan to meet again next month - a match made in heaven we think!

Case Management Cymru are delighted to once again be providing funding to help support the Headway Cardiff & South East Wales Hawthorn Group for another year!

Today we went along for a visit, to catch up with everyone and join in with a few of the activities that were taking place.

It was brilliant to see yet again how valued this much needed service is to the people that access it's support, and wonderful to see new faces (and familiar ones!) thoroughly enjoying the group.

Thank you to CEO, Rebecca Pearce, and all the staff and volunteers for letting us join in!
