Tea, Scones & Firelight Above Loch Earn

Some stays are not just about where you sleep.

They are about arriving tired, putting the kettle on, warming yourself by the fire, eating scones fresh from the oven, and sinking into a cosy bed while the hills settle around you.

At Wester Auchraw Croft, two nights gives you time to properly soften — slow mornings, homemade breakfast, forest walks, Loch Earn air, and the quiet comfort of an old Highland croft.

The Old Croft Is Breathing Again

Wester Auchraw Croft has a rare old soul.

When I began renovating it in 2013, it was close to a ruin. Beneath the dust and neglect were the bones of an ancient Highland croft: thick stone walls, deep little windows and the extraordinary old cruck-frame timbers still holding their ground above my head.

I did not want to polish the life out of it.

I wanted to listen to it.

Slowly, the house came back. White walls. Old beams. A fire burning again in the hearth. Books, artwork, gathered treasures and small flashes of colour. The roughness was allowed to remain alongside the beauty. That has always mattered to me.

My children grew up here while I danced the daily dance of running a busy and successful B&B. There were breakfasts, fires to light, stories shared around the table, muddy boots, laughter, exhaustion and many beautiful strangers passing through the door.

Then came a long inner winter.

Life sometimes asks us to stop. To go underneath the surface. To sit with the old emotions that have been frozen in place for far too long.

But winter is not the end of the story.

Something in me has begun to thaw. My power is returning. My creativity is returning. The camera is back in my hand. The words are beginning to flow again. That is why you may be seeing more of my posts lately.

I am not trying to become louder.

I am simply coming back to life.

And perhaps the croft is breathing with me.

The Goddess speaks above Loch Earn

There are days when the Highlands refuse to behave themselves.

Sunlight breaks through one side of the sky, rain comes tumbling down the other, and the hills at the head of Loch Earn turn every possible shade of green. The great Breadalbane mountains sit behind Lochearnhead like old guardians, watching the weather paint and repaint the land. The National Park describes this view as a classic Highland scene, with the village set against the Breadalbane mountains.

I caught this moment through my lens from the lochside a fleeting opening in the clouds before the whole painting changed again.

Perhaps that is why I have always loved photography. It teaches you to stop trying to control the day. You simply learn to see what is already being offered.

Years ago, I used to take people out on photography courses through these hills and glens. I am feeling the pull to open that door again: small, unrushed photography walks for anyone who would love to explore the wild beauty around Loch Earn with fresh eyes.

Nothing too polished. Nothing too serious.

Just boots, weather, a camera, and God’s palette doing its thing.

Send me a message if that speaks to you.

Romantic Weekend Near Loch Earn in the Perthshire Highlands
No one comes to the Highlands to hurry. Yet many arrive carrying the rhythm of the city with them — notifications still echoing, shoulders still held tight from traffic and deadlines. The shift does not happen instantly. It happens gradually. Often, it begins when the road curves north and Loch Earn first comes into view.

Just 90 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh, Loch Earn rests quietly within the Perthshire Highlands — close enough for a weekend, far enough to feel like another tempo entirely. For couples seeking a romantic weekend near Glasgow or a refined break from Edinburgh, it offers something increasingly rare: space.

Not spectacle.
Not entertainment.
Space.

At Wester Auchraw Croft, a luxury Highland retreat near Loch Earn, the experience is intentionally unforced. The croft stands grounded within a Highland village, with loch, river and mountain unfolding beyond. Calm is not advertised here — it is composed through atmosphere, warmth and thoughtful detail.

Nomadic Nights: The Yurt in the Medicine Garden
For those drawn to something more elemental, the Yurt in the Medicine Garden offers a different rhythm again. Canvas walls soften the edges of sound. Lamplight replaces glare. The evening air carries woodsmoke and distant water. It is intimate without being theatrical — a quiet setting where conversation slows and presence deepens.

Romance in the Highlands is rarely extravagant. It is simpler than that. A shared walk along Loch Earn. A late return beneath a wide sky. A generous breakfast the following morning — buffet laid, mains cooked to order, greens and herbs gathered from the garden when the season allows.

Most guests notice the real shift on the second morning. Sleep deepens. The body settles. Time stretches. A two-night romantic Highland stay allows the nervous system to soften in a way a single night rarely can.

Room folders guide you towards local walks, wild swimming spots and forest bathing routes across the Perthshire Highlands, though many guests find that doing less becomes the greater pleasure.

No one comes to the Highlands to hurry.
And those who stay long enough begin to understand why.
