3. Mental health and wellbeing training

What is mental health? Sometimes people are not sure what mental health is and feel a bit afraid of it. That doesn’t have the same negative impact does it? Our physical health can be good or poor and can vary from day to day. When our physical health is good we can live life to the full. At other times we can be unwell and this can last weeks or months. Or we might be unwell just for a couple of days then we are back to normal. Sometimes our physical is poor because we haven’t taken good care of ourselves or because we were born with a tendency to certain illnesses. When we are unwell we are likely to have less energy and motivation and find taking part in work or play mode difficult. All of these things are true of mental health. The main difference between physical and mental health is that our emotions, our ability to work and our relationships are the main things to be influenced by our mental health. When our mental health is positive we can cope with life’s ups and downs. Our mood is stable and we feel optimistic. When we are mentally unwell we may experience mental or emotional pain. Our mood maybe low and we might lose confidence in our ability to cope with life’s challenges. Sometimes we can have long term mental health problems, just as we can get longer lasting physical illnesses and we can recover in much the same way. Of course the other big difference is that you can’t get a mental health problem from someone else, it isn’t like catching the flu. Physical and mental health have an effect on each other. If your physical health is poor then your mental health is likely to be low. If your mental health is poor then you are more likely to get physically ill. The good news is you can make a massive difference and be aware of your own mental health. By taking a Fife Medical Group mental health course and becoming a mental health first aider is one of the ways that helps you make a difference to your own and other peoples mental health. please get in touch to discuss any requirements

From Ugly Duckling to beautiful Swan: The Transformation of Fife Medical Group HQ 🦢

This was Fife Medical Group HQ just a year ago.
An empty industrial unit.
Cold concrete floors.
Bare walls.

Open spaces filled with potential but little else.
To many people, it looked like just another warehouse. Some saw a challenge. Others saw a risk. A few probably thought the vision was far bigger than the reality in front of them. What they couldn't see was what we could see.

They couldn't see the training rooms.
They couldn't see the simulation suites.
They couldn't see the medical academy.
They couldn't see the future home of one of Scotland's most ambitious medical training and event medical providers.

Much like the story of the Ugly Duckling, what stood before us wasn't particularly impressive to the casual observer. It was easy to look at the building and focus on what it wasn't rather than what it could become.

The ugly duckling wasn't ugly. It was simply unfinished. The same could be said for our headquarters.

Over the last year we have invested countless hours, significant resources, and an enormous amount of determination into transforming that vision into reality.

Every wall erected.
Every room designed.
Every floor painted.
Every cable installed.
Every piece of equipment purchased.
Every late night.
Every early morning.
Every challenge overcome.

Step by step, the transformation continued.
People often see the finished result and assume success happened quickly. What they don't see are the setbacks, the planning meetings, the financial commitment, the obstacles, the stress, and the relentless belief that eventually the vision would become reality.

Today, when people walk through our headquarters, they see something very different.
They see professional training facilities.
They see dedicated learning environments.
They see realistic simulation areas.

They see a company investing in the future of medical education.
They see a headquarters that reflects the standards and ambitions of Fife Medical Group.
Most importantly, they see what can happen when a vision is matched with hard work.

The transformation of this building mirrors the transformation of our company. What started as a small idea has grown into a respected organisation providing event medical cover, education, training, consultancy, safeguarding services, and medical support across Scotland And beyond.

The journey is far from over.
Like the swan, we are still growing.

We are still developing.
We are still improving.
We are still building.

But when we look back at where we started just one year ago, it serves as a powerful reminder that great things rarely begin looking great.

The ugly duckling became a swan because it never stopped growing into what it was meant to be.

Our headquarters has followed the same path.
What was once an empty shell is now becoming the beating heart of Fife Medical Group.

And the most exciting part?
We're only just getting started.

"Never judge a vision by its starting point. Judge it by the determination of those building it."

🚑 Inspiring the Next Generation of Lifesavers
At Fife Medical Group, we firmly believe that first aid is not just a qualification. It is a life skill.

Every year, thousands of lives could be impacted positively if more people had the confidence to recognise an emergency, take immediate action, and provide potentially life-saving interventions before professional help arrives. The difference between standing back and stepping forward often comes down to education, confidence, and practical experience.

This image captures something far more important than a training session. It represents knowledge being shared, confidence being built, and future responders taking their first steps towards understanding how to help someone in their moment of greatest need.

From learning how to recognise a cardiac arrest and perform effective CPR, to understanding how to respond to choking, severe bleeding, unconscious casualties, and medical emergencies, every lesson delivered has the potential to save a life in the future.

At Fife Medical Group, we are passionate about creating engaging, realistic and practical learning environments.

We believe that education should never simply be about slides on a screen. It should be immersive, interactive and memorable. Learners should leave not only with knowledge, but with the confidence to act when it matters most.

Our commitment extends beyond professional responders. We actively support the education of young people, community groups, businesses, sports organisations and members of the public because emergencies do not wait for qualified clinicians to arrive. They happen in homes, schools, workplaces, sports grounds and communities every single day.

The young people pictured here may go on to become healthcare professionals, emergency service personnel, teachers, carers, coaches or leaders in their communities. Regardless of the path they choose, they now carry knowledge that could one day make the difference between life and death.

That is the true value of first aid education.

One skill.
One intervention.
One person willing to act.

Sometimes that is all it takes to change someone's story.

At Fife Medical Group, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, realistic and professional first aid education across Scotland, empowering individuals with the skills, confidence and mindset to make a difference when every second counts.

Learn today.
Act tomorrow.
Save a life
when it matters most.

Perspective changes everything.

For many years, severe allergies were often viewed as a simple dietary issue. Something that could be managed by "just avoiding certain foods."

The tragic death of Benedict Blythe changed that perspective forever.
His story highlighted a reality that healthcare professionals, parents, and educators have long understood: anaphylaxis is not an inconvenience. It is a medical emergency that can become life-threatening within minutes.

The introduction of Benedict's Law represents more than legislation. It represents a shift in thinking.

From awareness to action. From guidance to accountability. From hoping staff know what to do, to ensuring they are trained and prepared.

Every major improvement in safety usually begins with a change in perspective. We stop asking, "Will this happen?" and start asking, "Are we prepared if it does?"

Whether in healthcare, education, sports, events, or the workplace, preparedness saves lives.

Sometimes the most important lesson from a tragedy is not what happened, but how it changes the way we think going forward.

At Fife Medical Group, we fully support any initiative that improves allergy awareness, emergency preparedness, and the ability of staff to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis quickly and effectively.

Because when perspective changes, practice changes. And when practice changes, lives are saved. ❤️🩺

🚑💥 First Aid Myths – BUSTED by Fife Medical Group! 💥🚑

Let’s face it—when it comes to first aid, everyone seems to know someone whose gran swears by butter on burns, brandy for shock, or pulling out whatever's sticking out of a wound. The problem is… some of those old-school remedies can actually do serious harm.

So at Fife Medical Group, we’re here to set the record straight, bust some myths, and maybe ruffle a few outdated first aid feathers. Get ready—this one's a wild ride.

---

🧈 MYTH 1: “Put butter on a burn.”
🚫 Please don’t turn yourself into toast.
✅ Truth: Use cool running water for 20 minutes. Butter traps heat and increases infection risk. Stick to breakfast for butter.

---

👅 MYTH 2: “Put something in the mouth during a seizure.”
🚫 Unless you fancy a trip to A&E—for your fingers.
✅ Truth: Never put anything in their mouth. Just protect their head, move objects out of the way, and time the seizure. Call 999 if it lasts over 5 minutes.

---

🥶 MYTH 3: “Warm hypothermia patients with a hot bath.”
🚫 You're not defrosting chicken.
✅ Truth: Gradual warming with blankets and warm drinks (if alert) is best. Sudden rewarming can trigger heart issues.

---

⚡ MYTH 4: “Don’t touch someone being electrocuted—you’ll get zapped too.”
✅ Only true if the power is still on.
✅ Truth: Turn off the power first, then you can help. Electricity doesn’t share well.

---

💉 MYTH 5: “Remove an object stuck in a wound.”
🚫 Unless you want more blood than a Tarantino movie.
✅ Truth: Leave it in place, apply pressure around it, and wait for emergency services. It might be stopping internal bleeding.

---

🥴 MYTH 6: “Sit someone up if they faint.”
🚫 That’s how you get Round 2.
✅ Truth: Lay them flat, lift their legs, loosen tight clothing. Let blood flow back to the brain.

---

🦷 MYTH 7: “Knocked-out tooth? It’s gone forever.”
🚫 Not if you act fast.
✅ Truth: Rinse gently (no scrubbing), store in milk or saliva, and get to a dentist within 30 minutes for the best shot at saving it.

---

🐍 MYTH 8: “Suck the venom out of a snake bite.”
🚫 We’re not in a cowboy film.
✅ Truth: Immobilise, keep the limb below heart level, and seek emergency care. Do NOT cut, suck, or apply a tourniquet.

---

🐝 MYTH 9: “Squeeze or tweeze out a bee sting.”
🚫 That’s how you get more venom.
✅ Truth: Scrape it sideways with a card or blunt object.

---

🍫 MYTH 10: “Someone with diabetes in distress? Give them insulin.”
🚫 Nope—that can be fatal.
✅ Truth: If they’re shaky, dizzy, or unresponsive, it could be low blood sugar—give a sugary drink or sweets if they’re awake. Never give insulin unless you're qualified.

---

👃 MYTH 11: “Tilt your head back for a nosebleed.”
🚫 Not unless you want to taste your own blood.
✅ Truth: Lean forward and pinch the soft part of the nose for 10–15 minutes.

---

🧊 MYTH 12: “Apply ice directly to a sprain or injury.”
🚫 Say hello to ice burns.
✅ Truth: Wrap ice in a cloth or towel. 15–20 minutes max, then off for 20.

---

🫁 MYTH 13: “If someone is choking, hit them on the back right away.”
🚫 Not while they’re still coughing!
✅ Truth: Encourage coughing first. If they can't breathe, speak, or cough—then it’s time for back blows and abdominal thrusts.

---

🧠 MYTH 14: “If they didn’t pass out, it’s not a concussion.”
🚫 That’s wishful thinking.
✅ Truth: Concussions can happen without loss of consciousness. Look out for confusion, headache, vomiting, or memory issues.

---

🧪 MYTH 15: “Clean wounds with hydrogen peroxide or alcohol—it kills bacteria!”
🚫 Yes, and it kills healthy tissue too.
✅ Truth: Rinse with clean water or saline. Avoid harsh chemicals unless directed by a medic.

---

🫀 MYTH 16: “AEDs are only for trained professionals.”
🚫 Waiting for a pro could cost a life.
✅ Truth: AEDs are designed for anyone to use. They guide you step by step with audio prompts.

---

🍺 MYTH 17: “Give someone alcohol to calm them if they’re in shock.”
🚫 What is this, 1922?
✅ Truth: Alcohol is a depressant. Keep them warm and still, but no brandy required.

---

🦻 MYTH 18: “Put something in the ear to get a bug out.”
🚫 Cotton buds = deeper bugs.
✅ Truth: Tilt the head and let gravity work. If that fails, seek medical help.

---

🪵 MYTH 19: “Use a tourniquet for every bleed.”
🚫 Not every bleed needs one.
✅ Truth: Use direct pressure first. Tourniquets are for life-threatening limb bleeds and need to be applied correctly.

🥶 MYTH 20: “If someone has frostbite, rub the area to warm it up.”
🚫 Please don’t massage frozen tissue.
✅ Truth: Gently re-warm in warm (not hot) water, ideally between 37–39°C. Rubbing can cause tissue damage.

🔍 Dental BLS, ILS & Emergency Medications Training – Let’s Get It Right.

It’s frustrating to see so many training providers stabbing in the dark about what is or isn’t involved in dental-specific BLS, ILS and emergency drugs training. Misinformation doesn’t just confuse—it can be dangerous.

⚠️ If you're not qualified, regulated, or familiar with the current GDC guidelines for dental teams, it's best to leave it alone. Lives depend on getting this right.

🦷 For the record, proper training should always include:
✅ Resus Council UK-compliant BLS & ILS (with dental-specific scenarios) in-line with GDC guidelines
✅ Use of an AED, oxygen, airway adjuncts
✅ Full ABCDE approach for deteriorating patients
✅ In-depth coverage of emergency medications, including:

Adrenaline (for anaphylaxis)

Midazolam (for seizures)

GTN & Aspirin (for suspected MI)

Salbutamol (for asthma attacks)

Glucose gel/Glucagon (for hypoglycaemia)

🧠 This isn’t guesswork. It's about following evidence-based practice, ensuring patient safety, and meeting GDC & CQC standards.

📚 If you’re unsure – ask. If you're unqualified – don’t speculate. Let the professionals deliver what’s needed, not what’s assumed.

🚑 First Aid Training – Because “I Saw It on YouTube” Isn’t a Qualification 😅

🚑 First Aid Training – More Than Just a Certificate! 💡

From all of us here at Fife Medical Group, we want to talk about something that saves lives, builds confidence, and strengthens communities — First Aid Training.

Let’s face it — in an emergency, panic sets in fast. One second you’re at a family BBQ, the next Uncle Joe’s turning purple over a sausage roll and everyone’s shouting different things:
“Call 999!”
“Do the Heimlich!”
“Google it!”
“Somebody get the dog out the way!” 🐶

At Fife Medical Group, we bring frontline experience into every session. Our instructors are not only qualified trainers — they’re also emergency responders, medics, and healthcare professionals who’ve seen the real impact of good (and bad) first aid decisions

This is exactly why First Aid Training matters — and why Fife Medical Group delivers it with real knowledge, real experience… and just enough banter to keep it memorable.

💡 What we cover:
🧠 What you’ll gain:

Lifesaving skills that you’ll actually remember

The confidence to act when others freeze

Real-world scenarios and hands-on practice

Knowledge that goes beyond the bare minimum

CPR (not just chest pumping like in the movies)

Choking (yes, there’s more to it than “whack their back and hope for the best”)

Burns, bleeds, breaks, and when NOT to trust your mate who once watched Casualty

And yes, we’ll finally explain what that green first aid box is actually for (spoiler: not just storing biscuits)

Our trainers bring stories, scenarios, and decades of frontline experience — because emergencies don’t follow a script, and neither do we.

And don’t worry — you don’t need to be a doctor, superhero, or even particularly coordinated. We’ll guide you step by step until you’re saying:
“Actually, I’ve got this.” 💪

💬 We often hear:
"What if I do something wrong?"
Our answer? Doing something is better than doing nothing. With the right training, your actions could be the difference between life and death.

📍 Courses across Fife and beyond

🧠 Knowledge is power. Laughter helps it stick. First aid could save a life.
So let’s learn it — and have a laugh doing it.

So whether you're a parent, teacher, construction worker, event steward, or just someone who wants to be prepared — our first aid training is for you.

✅ Be ready.
✅ Be confident.
✅ Be the difference.

💙 Let’s build a safer community — one lifesaver at a time.

🧠 Mental Health & Well-being Training – Because It’s OK Not to Be OK 💬

From all of us at Fife Medical Group, let’s have a real conversation.

We train for physical emergencies every day — CPR, choking, broken bones — but what about the emergencies we can’t see? The ones that don’t come with flashing lights or blood pressure monitors.

Because truthfully?
Mental health first aid is just as vital.

In homes, schools, workplaces, and communities — people are carrying invisible weights: anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, grief, and sometimes even thoughts of su***de. And most of the time, they don’t come with a warning label.

That’s why Mental Health and Well-being Training is not just “nice to have.”
It’s essential.

At Fife Medical Group, our training doesn’t just tick boxes — it opens eyes, hearts, and conversations.

💡 What you'll gain from our sessions:

Confidence to spot early signs of mental distress

Practical tools to support someone struggling

How to approach a conversation without fear of “saying the wrong thing”

Knowing when, where, and how to signpost for further help

A deeper understanding of stress, anxiety, trauma, and su***de prevention

Ways to protect your own well-being too

You don’t need to be a counsellor to show someone they’re not alone. You just need to be present, informed, and equipped to listen with purpose.

And no — we don’t run our training like a boring slideshow with a coffee and a silent room. Our courses are interactive, real, compassionate — and sometimes even a little humorous (because it’s OK to laugh while learning, too).

✨ One conversation can change — or save — a life.
✨ One kind, informed response can be the first step in someone’s recovery.
✨ And one trained person in your team could make all the difference.

Whether you’re in healthcare, education, security, hospitality, or just part of a community that cares — this training is for you.

📍 Available across Fife and surrounding areas.
📞 Message us to book a course for your workplace or group.
💙 Let’s break stigma, raise awareness, and create a culture where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.

You never know who might be quietly needing a lifeline — maybe even yourself. Let’s be ready.

💪 Manual Handling Training – Because Your Back Isn't as Young as It Used to Be 😅

💪 Manual Handling Training – Because You're Not a Forklift, Karen 😅

Let’s talk about manual handling — or as we like to call it, “how not to ruin your back trying to be a hero.”

At Fife Medical Group, we’ve seen it all:
🧱 Someone lifting a box with the elegance of a greased walrus
🪑 A heroic solo attempt at moving a sofa that ends in a pulled hamstring and hurt pride
🦴 Or the classic “it’s only light” right before someone becomes best friends with their chiropractor

We get it — you're strong, independent, and probably once lifted a fridge on your own during a house move in 2009. But here's the thing: lifting wrong doesn't make you tough — it makes you injured.

That’s why Manual Handling Training exists:
✅ To keep you safe
✅ To keep your workplace compliant
✅ And let’s be honest — to avoid becoming that story everyone laughs about in the break room.

🧠 In our training, we cover:

The science of safe lifting (yes, there’s actual science)

Why your spine isn’t built like a Jenga tower

When to team lift and when to say “I’ll just wait for Dave, he’s taller”

How to use aids and equipment properly (instead of dragging things across the floor like a caveman)

And our personal favourite: the “NO TWISTING WHILE LIFTING” gospel 😇

💬 You’ll walk out saying things like:
“Bend the knees!”
“Keep the load close to the body!”
“Where’s the risk assessment for this coffee machine?”

Our sessions are fun, practical, hands-on, and packed with real-world examples that make sense (and stick with you longer than that last dodgy back pain).

So whether you’re in care, construction, hospitality, retail or just tired of pretending that box of printer paper isn’t heavy — get trained the right way. Your back will thank you.

📍 Courses across Fife and beyond
📞 Drop us a message to book in (before your spine files a complaint)

Because remember — you only get one back… and it’s not covered by warranty. 😂

⏱️ 72-Hour Fast Challenge | 36-Hour Update

At Fife Medical Group, we believe health decisions should always be guided by evidence, clinical awareness and listening to your body.

Our CEO commenced a planned 72-hour fast as part of his ongoing health and wellbeing journey. Having successfully completed prolonged fasts previously, the expectation was to reach the full 72-hour target.

However, at approximately 36 hours, energy levels had fallen significantly and symptoms consistent with low blood glucose were identified. Following assessment, the decision was made to safely conclude the fast.

Some may view this as falling short of the original goal. We view it differently.

The last time our CEO completed a 72-hour fast, his body weight and BMI were substantially higher, meaning his physiological reserves and metabolic demands were very different. Following a health transformation that has seen more than 13 stone lost, Type 2 Diabetes placed into remission and numerous medications discontinued, the body's response to prolonged fasting has naturally changed.

This demonstrates an important clinical principle:

Health is not about blindly pushing through. It is about recognising, assessing and responding appropriately to the information your body provides.

The outcome of this challenge has provided valuable insight that will help shape future fasting protocols and health goals.

Key Outcomes

✅ 36-hour fast successfully completed
✅ Valuable metabolic and physiological learning achieved
✅ Safe clinical decision-making demonstrated
✅ Health and wellbeing prioritised over ego
✅ Future fasting strategy identified

Health journeys are rarely linear. They involve learning, adapting and continually reassessing what is appropriate as our bodies change.

Most importantly, the wider health transformation remains a remarkable success story. From obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and multiple daily medications to a healthier, fitter and more active lifestyle, the progress made over the last few years remains extraordinary.

The journey continues.
