The biggest nutrient gap in UK diets? No, it’s not protein.
Around 10% of UK adults use protein powders, with a similar number consuming protein bars. With protein products dominating shelves and social media, it’s easy to see why.
But protein isn’t the nutrient most people are lacking. In fact, it’s not even considered a public health concern in the UK.
The best snapshot of how the UK is eating comes from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2019–2023). And it shows the biggest nutrient gap is actually FIBRE, with 96% of the population not meeting the recommended 30g per day.

p.s. We’re not saying protein isn’t important. It’s essential for health and worth prioritising too, just not at the expense of fibre. The good news is that many nutrient-dense foods provide both protein and fibre, including beans, lentils, edamame, nuts and seeds.
