If you want to clear your skin from acne, you should be focusing on maintaining an inti-inflammatory diet.

An anti-inflammatory diet is one that keeps your blood sugar levels stable, has an adequate omega 3 and omega 6 ration intake, is rich in antioxidants, and helps your body to detox from the substances that are prone to inflame it.

When our blood sugar suffers big spikes, it produces inflammation. The easiest way to avoid this through diet is avoiding refined sugars (this includes refined flours)

The problem with our omega 6/3 consumption is the ratio in which we consume them. These two fats are called essential because our body does not produce them, hence we need to get them through our diet. W6 are pro-inflammatory fats, whereas W3 are anti-inflammatory. They are meant to be in equilibrium in a ratio of 1:1. The modern western diet has a ratio of approx. 20:1 (W6:W3). Try to reduce W6 intake and pump up on W3’s!

Antioxidants are the way our body combats oxidative stress, which also produces inflammation. Yes, our body produces its own antioxidants, however, because we are surrounded by so many extra stressors in our day-to-day life, we need to assist our body by taking plenty of these powerful compounds. The best way of including antioxidants in your diet is by eating the rainbow – the more colours on your plate the better!

The word detox seems to be everywhere nowadays. But it is not just a trend. We should help our body to get rid of all the toxic products we surround ourselves with every day (a lot of which, we can’t do much about).

Our liver transforms these toxins into substances that we can then eliminate through our gut, skin, kidneys and lungs. Look for bitter foods to assist your body’s detoxification.

A great way to give some extra love to the liver is enjoying lemon water throughout the day.

Most of us will fall in the middle section of the acne curve, and only a few will be either side of the graph.

All too often acne is written off as genetic, which would mean that there is nothing we can do about it.

However, research shows us that for people standing in the middle of this graph, our dietary and lifestyle choices are big drivers when it comes to skin conditions.

Which means that for the most of us, by addressing the underlaying cause, we can sayonara 👋🏻 acne for good.

What are these underlaying causes? Inflammation and oxidative stress.

If you are anything like me, your next question would be:

So, what causes inflammation and oxidative stress in our body?

There is more than one cause, and they tend to be interlinked. These are the main ones when talking acne.

▫️ Poor diet
▫️ Nutritional imbalances
▫️ Poor Gut health
▫️ Hormonal imbalances
▫️ Stress/mental health
▫️ Insulin resistance – blood sugar levels

There will always be people who seem totally immune to acne, and people for which, despite making their best efforts, diet and lifestyle will not enough.

Raise your hand if you are also in the middle!? 👱🏻🙋🏻🧔🏽

Stress can impact your acne through different pathways.

▫️ Increasing the production of androgens (or male hormones) involved in the development of acne.
▫️ Promoting the production of ace-inducing hormone IGF-1 (growth hormone).
▫️ Makes us consume foods that we should be avoiding when keeping acne at bay, spiking blood sugar, enhancing sebum production, and promoting inflammation

When acute stress becomes chronic, an entire cascade of hormones, inflammatory chemicals, and free radicals left unchecked can lead to fertile ground for acne.

By reducing stress, and inducing a relaxation response we are also assisting our body to heal acne.

The beneficial effects of certain aromas on the human psyche have been documented for a very long time. Our olfactory system (smell system) is tied up to our emotional control centre (limbic system).

Essential oils are capable of reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and enhancing cognitive function (depending on the oil we use).
Research into the use of lavender has shown it to improve mood, promote a sense of contentment, and it can help dampen down the sympathetic, or stress branch of the nervous system.

My favourite ways of using lavender are to rub a drop or two of lavender oil on my wrists/temples and drink some lavender tea.

Feeling a bit peckish today so I made some crunchy bites (didn’t last long…🤷🏻‍♀️)

These crispy kale crisps are not only a great and healthy alternative to normal potato crisps but they taste delicious and they are super easy to make. It makes a great crunchy, super healthy snack.
Kale is one of the healthiest and most nutritious foods on the planet. It is packed with important nutrients like vitamin A, K, C, B6, manganese, calcium…to name a few.

Incorporating kale into your diet will help you supercharge the nutrient content of your diet, which a lot of us need nowadays.
I love adding a bit of turmeric (to almost anything tbh…💁🏻‍♀️). It gives it that ani-inflammatory boost to help you fight your acne.

All you need is:
▫️Bunch of Kale
▫️TSP extra virgin olive oil
▫️Sea Salt to taste
▫️Black pepper to taste
▫️Turmeric to taste

Try these daily life swaps to heal your skin from within. They might seem simple but they are effective when healing acne.
All the potions and lotions you put on your skin won’t work unless you first address the root cause that is provoking your acne.

▫️Junk food / Whole foods: Changing your diet goes a long way when fighting pimples. Try to reduce your intake of sugar and processed foods and swap them with delicious and nourishing whole foods.

▫️Excess blue light and lack of sunlight / Time in nature and vitamin Sun: We spend too much time indoors looking at screens and your circadian rhythm and vitamin D levels are taking the punch. Try to get at least 20min of sunlight in the morning to kick start your body’s natural cycle and get some vitamin Sun (D) production going. If your vitamin D is low, ask your Dr for a supplement to suit your needs.

▫️Being lazy / Movement: We watch the days go by sitting at our desks. Going to the gym might not always be an option but there are many ways to get some movement in your day - go for a walk at lunch time, do some stretching, run up and down the stairs a few times throughout the day, get off the bus 1 stop early and walk that last bit…

▫️Stress / Build resilience: Unfortunately, it is difficult – if not impossible – to avoid stress nowadays. But we can incorporate different techniques to increase our resilience against it. Yoga, meditation, journaling, breathwork, or any activity that calms your mind (drawing, reading, dancing, singing…you name it) are a great starting point.

▫️Harsh chemicals / Skin friendly products: When it comes to skin care, less is more. Reduce your skin’s chemical burden by reducing the number of ingredients/products you use. Go to the Environmental Working Group - skin deep page to find out more about skincare products and ingredients to avoid.

Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil that has many benefits for the skin. When used topically, it can help treat pimples. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make it a great alternative to harsh chemicals which will strip your skin of it’s natural oils.

Several studies show that it can help reduce the amount and severity of acne.

In one study, Tea Tree Oil was found to be as effective against acne as benzoyl peroxide (one of the most commonly used anti-acne medications).

If you want to try using Tea Tree Oil don’t forget to test a drop or two on a small area of your skin and wait 24 hours to see if any reaction occurs.

I think we all agree that movement is a crucial component of our overall wellness and that different exercise styles work for different people.

We can also agree that the levels of stress that most of us currently live with have a negative impact on our health.

When healing acne, it is important to make sure we move our bodies every day and work on managing our stress levels.

The current trend of crazy intense workouts can be a significant contributor to increasing our body’s stress levels.

When we put our body through so much every day, women can completely miss their periods, get really bad PMS, and of course, breakouts may appear before our cycle because hormonal swings can be much more drastic.

I am not saying that you shouldn’t be doing HIIT workouts (for example). This type of exercise has incredible benefits! But give your body the rest it deserves before you squeeze in the next one.

The amount of stress your body can handle will vary from one person to the next.

When it comes to moving your body, more does not mean better. Your physical activity routine doesn’t have to be all or nothing - unless you are a professional athlete.

Remove the pressure to get in a “workout,” and simply enjoy moving your body! Dance around the house, do a sun salutation or two, do some stretching, go for a walk…

How do you move your body every day?

Hormones do play a role in the development of acne, especially in women.

Women tend to have a harder time with their hormones because, opposite to men, women’s hormones don’t stay stable day to day, month to month.

If you are someone who tends to breakout around that time of the month, it is because of all the hormonal shifts that are happening which can lead to breakouts. In most cases is not because your hormones are malfunctioning, they are just doing what they are supposed to be doing.

If you are acne prone then aim to balance blood sugar, get rid of food sensitivities, balance the gut microbiome, consume essential fatty acid, and manage your stress.

By doing this you will be able to reduce those “hormonal” breakouts.

Green tea is known for its high level of L-theanine and EGCG. These are plant chemicals that are believed to be responsible for the anti-stress effects of green tea by lowering the stress hormones in the body.

Matcha is a pumped-up version of green tea when it comes to antioxidants and phytonutrients content, where you consume the leaves instead of throwing them away after you’ve steeped them.

Matcha has a small amount of caffeine, but because of its content of L-theanine, impacts the body in a much gentler way and tends to be better tolerated than coffee.

Because of this, matcha assists to promote clear skin by reducing stress and because of its anti-inflammatory benefits. If you are struggling with acne, especially those of you with high levels of stress, why not swap your daily coffee for a supercharged cup of matcha and take advantage of its amazing benefits.

Are you a coffee or a matcha drinker?
