Triggers are not a sign that you’re failing—they’re a sign that something inside you needs attention.

Often, a trigger isn’t really about what’s happening in the present moment. It’s your nervous system responding to something that feels familiar from the past. A tone of voice, a look, feeling ignored, criticised, rejected, or out of control can activate old wounds without us even realising it.

The goal isn’t to eliminate every trigger.
The goal is to become aware of them.
The goal is to learn how to respond to them.

This resource is one tool to support you with the process.

I have reposted this because this resource is just that good.

Exhausted can feel too small a word for what trauma does to the nervous system.

Trauma exhaustion is not just tiredness — it can come from constantly scanning for danger, overthinking, hypervigilance, disrupted sleep, and emotional overwhelm. Even everyday tasks can take far more energy than people realise.

Helpful things can include:• predictable routines• reducing overstimulation• grounding exercises using your senses

Healing begins with helping the body feel safe enough to rest and relax.

Your brain is constantly trying to protect, regulate, and reconnect you — and these “happy chemicals” play a huge role in that.

Dopamine helps with motivation.
Oxytocin supports connection and trust.
Serotonin influences mood and self-worth.
Endorphins help soothe stress and pain.

When we’re overwhelmed, burnt out, traumatised, or stuck in survival mode, these systems can become dysregulated — and it can show up as exhaustion, anxiety, numbness, low motivation, mood swings, or feeling disconnected from yourself and others.

Healing isn’t about “being positive all the time. Sometimes it’s about gently supporting your nervous system through rest, movement, connection, sunlight, creativity, laughter, nourishment, and safety.

Remember- Small daily habits really do matter.

A sound nervous system reset is one way you can help the body return from a state of stress, overwhelm, hypervigilance, or shutdown back into regulation and safety.

To do this — close your eyes and listen to sounds that feel calming, grounding, or familiar to your nervous system. Nature sounds, rain, waves, soft music, white noise, or even silence can help signal safety to the brain and body.

Some signs your nervous system may be beginning to reset can include:

• feeling more present instead of dissociated or numb
• being able to rest and be still
• reduced muscle tension, jaw clenching, headaches, or stomach issues
• less emotional reactivity
• having capacity again — emotionally, mentally, physically

Healing often begins when we create moments when the body no longer feels like it has to survive every minute.

Avoidance feels safe in the moment — but it reinforces a belief that you can’t cope.

The more we avoid difficult emotions, conversations, memories, or situations, the more the nervous system learns: this must be dangerous.

And so the cycle continues:
trigger → anxiety → avoidance → temporary relief → deeper fear.

Healing often begins when we gently stop organising our lives around fear. Not by forcing ourselves, but by building tolerance, safety, and new experiences that challenge old beliefs.

I hope you can compassionately allow yourself you face your avoidance.

When the world feels dysregulating, distress isn’t a personal failure — it’s a normal human response.

You don’t always have to be thriving.
Sometimes regulating is the work.

Not every connection is meant to carry your pain.
Not every person is safe, ready, or able to hold your story — and that’s okay. 💛

Sometimes, one trauma response is the urge to tell — to explain what happened, to be understood, or to find connection through sharing.

That’s not wrong — it’s your nervous system searching for safety and belonging.

But not every space is safe enough for that kind of sharing. Some moments ask us to pause, breathe, and notice:

“Is this a space where my story will be honored?”

Mindfulness helps us slow down and witness our emotions, so we can share from a place of choice and healing — not from survival or pain.

Let’s move away from trauma dumping and towards mindful, trauma-informed communication — where connection is rooted in safety, not survival.

Blessings,
Dr Kelly
