❤️Welcome to Sickle Cell Awareness Month🩸

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body.

But how are you born with it?

It all comes down to your genes 🧬. Sickle cell disease occurs when a child inherits a sickle haemoglobin gene from both parents. The parents may have sickle cell trait and have no symptoms themselves, but when both carry the gene, there is a chance their child will inherit sickle cell disease.

The condition can cause red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped, which can block blood vessels and lead to severe pain, anaemia and other complications.

This month, let’s raise awareness, challenge misconceptions and amplify the voices of people living with sickle cell disease. ❤️
