Nervous system balance has become one of my biggest priorities - both within my clients and within myself 🤍

In a world full of rush, deadlines, overstimulation and constant stress, I’ve noticed that this year I spend more and more time talking about ways to support the nervous system… sometimes even more than explaining the importance of organic or locally grown foods 🫣

Healing stopped feeling so overwhelming when I realised it wasn’t about doing more, restricting more, or “fixing” myself harder.
It is all about creating safety in my body again. Which meant:

sleeping earlier
eating enough
slowing down
morning daylight
less scrolling
more grounding
more nourishment
more softness
more boundaries

A regulated nervous system changes everything:
digestion, hormones, energy, mood, blood sugar, sleep and how we experience life itself. 💓

If regular porridge spikes your glucose, try this balanced version that combines slow carbs, protein, healthy fats and fibre to stabilise energy and keep you full longer.

Ingredients
• 40 g jumbo oats
• 1 scoop protein powder
• 3 tbsp Greek yoghurt (full fat preferred)
• 1 tbsp chia seeds
• 120–150 ml unsweetened milk (dairy or plant)
• ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)

Optional toppings
• Handful of berries
• Walnuts or almonds
• 1 tsp almond or peanut butter
• Ground flaxseed

Method
1. Combine oats, chia seeds and milk and soak (minimum 10 minutes or overnight).
2. Stir in protein powder and Greek yoghurt.
3. Add cinnamon and toppings.
4. Serve cold or warm gently.

Why this works

✔ Protein slows carbohydrate absorption
✔ Fat from yoghurt and seeds reduces glucose spikes
✔ Fibre from chia improves glycaemic response
✔ Jumbo oats digest slower than instant oats

Breakfast cereal is one of the most normalised ultra-processed foods in children’s diets.

As a nutritional therapist, I don’t look at breakfast as just calories. I look at what actually supports a child’s brain, nervous system and energy for the day!

Breakfast cereals (yes, even the “healthy” ones) are often:
– very high in refined carbohydrates
– very low in protein
– low in healthy fats
– quickly digested

Which means they give quick energy… and then a crash.

And what often follows?
Difficulty concentrating.
Low energy.
Mood swings.
Hunger an hour later.

That’s not bad behaviour. That’s unstable blood sugar.

Kids don’t just need food in the morning.
They need protein, complex carbs and healthy fats to actually function well.

Also something rarely discussed: temperature of food matters.

Cold milk + processed cereal first thing in the morning is:
• fast glucose
• low nutrient density
• not very satiating
• also causing cold and dampness according to TCM

I know most of us don’t have much time in the morning , but next time you reach for cereal - try this instead :

• eggs - fried, boiled or scrambled
• warm porridge + seeds + Greek yoghurt
• pancakes with cottage cheese ( make on the weekend and freeze them)
• egg muffins (cook in batch and freeze them too)

Remember - our children’s health is in our hands and this isn’t about being perfect.
This is about what we do most days that makes an impact! 🙏🏻💖

Up at 6:00am this morning:

All done before the rest of the world woke up. And now my cup is full to be shared again 💖
