Reflecting on the Pilates for Pain Management course I ran last month for physios and osteopaths - the biggest takeaways weren’t from me, they were from the group.

Clinicians trained even 5 years ago said this pain-science content wasn’t part of their training. Those trained longer ago were even more surprised. Clearly there’s still a real gap in how pain is taught - and it’s costing patients.

We also talked about the hard stuff: helping someone feel safe in their body when what they want is a quick fix. That’s where cueing matters - the right word, the right pace, can be the difference between guarding and trusting.

Already looking forward to the next one in October! 🙌

Recognizing the protective intent of your nervous system patterns.

Do you associate with any of these? It’s a likely yes if you’re struggling with persistent pain, fatigue, or anxiety. Well these are not character flaws… they’re nervous system adaptations. This is not to say we don’t want to work on moving away from some of these adaptations, but to approach them with curiosity instead of criticism creates the safety we need to actually change.

Shame keeps us stuck in threat mode. Compassion creates the conditions for healing.

Your hypervigilance once kept you safe. Your catastrophizing helped you prepare. Your rigidity gave you control when things felt chaotic. These adaptations made sense at the time, and they still make sense now - your nervous system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

The work isn’t to force yourself to be different. It’s to gently show your nervous system that it’s safe enough to soften, to trust, to try something new.

Which side effects would you choose?

Most people start this work for the pain relief, but stay for the person they become in the process.

This is what happens when you rewire your brain, calm your nervous system, and do the inner work.

To list a few:

✨The ability to feel emotions without fear, letting them move through you.

✨Unapologetic authenticity instead of performing for others.

✨Boundaries that actually protect your energy.

✨Deep compassion for yourself and others.

✨The courage to trust your body’s wisdom.

✨Presence in your body, not just living in your head.

✨Freedom from people-pleasing.

✨High levels of empathy.

You won’t just recover from pain. You’ll recover and discover yourself.

Might sound strange, but hearing ‘your classes are gentle and sooo not gentle’ is the ultimate compliment. That’s exactly what I’m trying to create; an environment where people feel safe enough to soften, yet brave enough to test their limits. I also love providing the chance for us all to discover that effective strengthening can come from small, subtle, and often soft, movements. We don’t always need to do more and more to get results.

I’ve had a lot of people in class recently who are recovering from or dealing with long term health issues. It’s a privilege to have a lived experience, to enable me to truly empathize with these clients. If you’re wanting to get into exercise with a long-term health struggle, my classes or sessions could be a great place to start.

Come and join the party !

Recently on the last JEMS training weekend, we discussed what holistic treatment really means. It’s not about treating everything at once or turning it into a data project. Holistic treatment is actually quite simple. It’s about stripping things back and finding that subtle soft communication between yourself and your patient.

This is the same for holistic recovery. Recovering from persistent pain is actually very simple. It’s not something complex, but it does involve embracing the complexities of yourself and also the complexities of the environment you are in. Simple, but often not easy 💚.
