What could my swollen lymph nodes mean?

It’s a question many want the answer to. Finding swollen lymph nodes can feel unsettling, but in most cases, it’s simply your body’s immune system responding to a minor infection or cold.
However, knowing how to check them—and understanding what different textures mean—can help you stay informed:

* Soft, tender & mobile: Usually linked to a recent infection or cold; tends to be bouncy and sore to the touch.
* Firm, rubbery & mobile: Can point to an ongoing infection or a mild, continuing immune response.
* Hard and fixed in place: Worth having assessed by a healthcare professional, as a hard, painless node that doesn’t move easily can sometimes be linked to more serious underlying causes.

When to see a doctor: Most swollen nodes settle down within 2 to 4 weeks. If a swelling lasts longer, keeps growing, feels hard or fixed, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a persistent fever, it’s always best to get it checked by a GP or healthcare professional for a proper assessment.

CyberKnife vs Proton Beam Therapy

When exploring advanced radiotherapy options, you might wonder how treatments like CyberKnife and Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) compare. While both are non-invasive, highly precise forms of outpatient treatment, they work differently and suit different clinical needs:

* Radiation Type: CyberKnife uses high-energy X-rays (photons) delivered via a robotic arm with real-time motion tracking, whereas proton beam therapy uses protons that release their energy and stop directly at the tumour (the Bragg Peak), leaving no exit dose.
* Tumour Size & Movement: CyberKnife is typically ideal for smaller tumours (up to around 5cm) that move with breathing, such as in the lung, liver, or prostate. Proton beam therapy can handle larger tumours with no size limit and is especially beneficial when tumours are located near sensitive organs (like the brain, spine, or skull base) or in children.
* Treatment Course: CyberKnife is usually delivered over a small number of sessions (a few days), while proton beam therapy often requires multiple daily sessions over several weeks.

Neither treatment is universally “better”—the right choice depends entirely on your tumour type, size, location, and wider treatment goals.

* Imaging Tests: Tools like CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans, and ultrasounds are used to detect tumours, determine the cancer’s exact stage, assess if it has spread, and guide surgical planning. 
* The Biopsy: A biopsy is the main test required to confirm a diagnosis, allowing pathologists to examine extracted tissue for cancer cells, tumour types, and HPV status. 
* The Diagnostic Timeline: From first noticing a symptom to receiving a confirmed diagnosis can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months, with specialist evaluation and testing typically taking 1 to 4 weeks.

Understanding how patients think about cancer treatment is central to how we support them. 

Proton International London recently commissioned independent research with 2,006 UK adults to explore how people approach a cancer diagnosis, looking closely at the role of side effects, independent research, and treatment awareness. 

Three key findings stood out: 

1️⃣ Quality of life is a primary concern: 77% of UK adults agree that quality of life after treatment should be a key consideration when a consultant recommends a course of action.  
2️⃣ Patients want to research their options: 71% said they would do extensive research of their own to find out more about available treatments.  
3️⃣ Awareness of proton beam therapy is low: While traditional options like chemotherapy and radiotherapy scored high in awareness, only 15% of UK adults are aware of proton beam therapy—despite it being available right here in the UK.
