Identifying and preventing morbidity and mortality caused by Streptococcus agalactiae.

4th International Symposium on ‘Streptococcus agalactiae’ Disease

24th - 26th February, 2026, Nairobi, Kenya Policy & Prevention: Discussing effective public health strategies and regulatory frameworks. Clinical Practice: Highlighting best practices and innovations in patient care.

Day 2’s sessions shifted the focus to the GBS vaccine pipeline and the complex policy frameworks required to ensure global access.

It was an honor to hear from world-class experts including Prof. Shabir Madhi, Per Fischer, and Kirsty Le Doare. Whether discussing the "Last Mile First" or the economic case for national immunisation programs, the message was clear: Science alone isn’t enough, we need sustainable implementation and regional leadership.

The energy among our 37-country delegation remained high as we moved into the final day of the symposium!🔬

"Collaboration is the bridge between policy and impact."

We were honoured to host Ms Mary Muthoni, CBS, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Public Health, at our gala dinner, where she delivered a powerful message on the future of maternal and neonatal health in Kenya. The PS underscored the government's commitment to integrating GBS prevention into broader public health frameworks and praised the collective efforts of the researchers and scientists in the room.

A call to action for all of us to ensure that every newborn has a healthy start, regardless of geography.

Science is driven by people, and last night was a testament to the dedicated individuals leading the fight against GBS.

We were privileged to be joined by Chief Guest PS MARY Muthoni, whose presence underscored the commitment to maternal and neonatal health at the highest levels. A significant moment of the evening was the presentation of the Carol Baker Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to our field.

Thank you to our speakers from Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the broader clinical community for reminding us why we move . Beyond the plenaries, these moments of networking and shared vision are where true partnerships are forged.

The science of GBS vaccines is advancing rapidly, but how do we implement them? In Plenary 4, we look at the evidence and economics behind the rollout.

Key Highlights:
📍 Policy Frameworks: Kirsty Le Doare on the evidence required by global health bodies.
📍 Effectiveness: Shamez Ladhani on the projected impact in the UK.
📍 The Business Case: Simon Procter on why GBS vaccines make economic sense for nations.

The world is watching as we move closer to a viable GBS vaccine. Plenary 3 at brings together the architects of the next generation of maternal immunisation.

We are privileged to hear the latest clinical and preclinical updates from:
🔬 Per Fischer on the progress toward the pivotal trial for the AlpN Vaccine.
🔬 Shabir Madhi presenting interim results from the Phase 1/2 study of IVT GBS-06 in healthy adult non-pregnant women.
🔬 Roberto Adamo on the development of a Polysaccharide-Based GBS Vaccine tailored for global health.
🔬 Timothy Cooke on the preclinical development of a high-coverage 10-serotype Bioconjugate GBS Vaccine.

From the lab bench to phase trials, this is where the future of neonatal protection is being written. 🌍

A huge thank you to all our delegates for making Nairobi so memorable!

Between the high-level plenaries and technical sessions, it's been wonderful to see so many of you connecting (and having a little fun with our ISSAD frame!)

Dr. Karen Puopolo’s career is a masterclass in translating basic science into clinical practice.

Starting as a laboratory scientist investigating GBS virulence, she has evolved into a leading voice in neonatal care. Her research on the long-term effects of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) and preterm GBS infection has been foundational to the field.

Most notably, Dr. Puopolo has been instrumental in leading the revised U.S. national guidance for managing infants at risk for GBS disease.
