What do Formula 1 and Yoga have in common?

When I was doing my social work training, we talked about the analogy of the body being like a formula 1 car and, as a complex machine designed to do amazing things, how it needs looking after.

It struck me as similar to the idea of the bodily vehicle in yoga…that this is our vehicle that carries us through this life. We all know what happens if that vehicle is not maintained and we just keep running and running it, or neglecting that sense that something isn’t working as it should, that something feels ‘off’ in the handling. Even if it’s running perfectly, it requires maintenance and downtime. And we can always learn to be more expert in our handling and understanding of this fantastic machine.

Of course an F1 car, as impressive a piece of engineering as it is, is astonishingly simple compared to a human body. And we are not simply mechanical beings. We need maintenance, servicing and care on all levels of our being.

Yoga understands this - and has the tools to work on every level. This is where opportunities to get ‘off the track’ and take some time can be especially valuable – retreats for a morning, a day, a weekend, a week or longer, even a regular ‘pit stop’ at a yoga class.
At our upcoming September retreat we’ll be offering this chance to pause, reset, rejuvenate, repair and feel ready to re-join the race - and I’ll be sharing a meditation where you can check-in and give yourself a quick ‘MOT’ on all levels.

If a weekend or day retreat isn’t for you, then I’d love to invite you if you’re local to a regular class – Mondays and Thursdays at Richmond and Hudswell. Other events, workshops and retreats are coming up, too – details on the website and on Facebook.

Wonderful weekend at the World Yoga Festival; talks, classes and workshops from world-renowned swamis and teachers on wisdom tradition, philosophy, asana, pranayama, kriya, koshas, karma, kleshas, yoga chikitsa, chanting, some uplifting Kirtan…and George Harrison. And that’s just the ones we were able to make it to!

In addition to deepening my own understanding and practice, a few new techniques resonated (and I was reminded of a few we haven’t revisited for a while!) and I will be sharing some of these in class over the next few weeks (and months…), as well as future workshops and retreats.

Classes continue over the summer at Richmond Town Hall (Mondays) and Hudswell (Thursdays), both 7pm.

A new venture in parntership with the lovely folk at Pealie's Barn 😊

In the first workshop, we’ll be focussing on three main practical aspects:
Cultivating Focus (‘soft fascination’), cultivating detachment (‘you’ and ‘your thoughts’) and related to this identifying less helpful habits and cultivating more beneficial ones.
We will discuss the metaphysics of the mind from a yogic point-of-view and how this relates to meditation practice as well as touching on the core spiritual ideas and having time to begin to explore techniques.

In the second workshop, we will be introduced to the key concepts of ‘yogic sleep’ and the benefits, some of which include stress relief, cognitive enhancement and better sleep before experiencing a yoga nidra session, similar to a guided meditation, leaving you relaxed and refreshed and ready for the rest of your day.
You can book either workshop or both via Pealie’s Barn website.

Yoga was never meant to stay limited to a mat. It shaped how people moved, breathed, ate, rested, focused, and lived. Different schools expressed it differently, but the intent always went deeper than physical practice alone.

At Yogotsav 2026, listen to conversations and demonstrations from some of India’s respected yoga voices and living traditions — including Kaivalyadhama, Iyengar, Krishnamacharya, Art of Living and more. With eminent personalities including OP Tiwariji, Maa Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, Dr. H.R. Nagendraji, Vidyut Jammwalji and others.

Registrations for online participation close tomorrow.
