Dark marks after acne don’t always mean acne scars.

If the skin is flat and the main change is colour, you may be dealing with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rather than true scarring.

The distinction matters because the treatment approach is different.

A simple rule to remember: flat and dark = pigment; indented or raised = scarring.

Itchy welts that appear suddenly, then disappear within hours?

That pattern is an important clue.

Urticaria, or hives, can easily be mistaken for eczema or insect bites, but individual welts usually fade within 24 hours without leaving a mark.

And despite the common assumption, an allergy is not always the cause.

Light patches that aren’t improving with antifungal treatment?

Not every pale patch on the chest or back is pityriasis versicolor. Progressive macular hypomelanosis can look very similar, but the underlying cause — and treatment — is different.

If the diagnosis isn’t right, the treatment won’t be either.

Itchy bumps that appeared after a holiday — and are still hanging around?

Sometimes the bite itself is long gone, but the skin reaction continues. Papular urticaria is a hypersensitivity reaction to insect bites and can be intensely itchy.

Worth considering when a new “eczema-like” rash appears after travel.

Frictional hyperpigmentation causes dark, rough patches in areas exposed to repeated pressure or rubbing, particularly the elbows and knees.

Leaning on desks, kneeling and friction during certain exercises can all contribute. Reducing the source of friction is an important first step in improving it.

Dark patches around your neck or skin folds?

They may be more than just pigmentation.

Acanthosis nigricans can be a visible sign of insulin resistance and may sometimes be associated with other hormonal or metabolic conditions.

Skincare can help with the pigmentation, but it’s important not to overlook what may be driving the changes underneath.

Save this and speak to your doctor if you notice new or worsening changes.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancers are the UK’s most common type of cancer, yet they are the most preventable. Regular sunscreen use saves lives, yet it’s taxed at 20% as a ‘luxury or cosmetic’. Sunscreen isn’t cosmetic, it’s critical. That’s why I support the call to Axe The SPF Tax.
