The miracle and mystery that is the placenta. ❤️

An extraordinary organ, grown for one purpose, to sustain and nurture new life.

The placenta is a lifeline between mama and baby. Delivering oxygen and nutrients, removing waste, producing essential hormones and helping protect a developing baby.

But perhaps what makes it even more remarkable is how much we are still discovering about it.

This temporary organ is incredibly complex, constantly adapting throughout pregnancy to meet the needs of a growing baby.

And then, when its work is complete, it is born too ✨

Nine months of extraordinary work, so often overlooked in the excitement of welcoming a baby into the world.

A reminder of just how intricate, intelligent and awe-inspiring our bodies really are.

The placenta deserves its own moment of wonder ✨

VBAC 🩵

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has updated its patient information on birth after a previous Caesarean — an important reminder that women deserve clear, balanced and evidence-based information about their options.

Did you know that around 3 in 4 women who plan a VBAC following one previous Caesarean and go into spontaneous labour will give birth vaginally?

Yet conversations around VBAC can often focus heavily on risk, rather than possibility.

Understanding those risks matters. But so does understanding the benefits, the alternatives and the individual circumstances of each woman.

A previous Caesarean does not automatically mean another Caesarean.

Every woman deserves to explore her options without fear, pressure or assumptions.

Because informed consent isn’t simply being told what is recommended. It’s being supported to make a decision that feels right for you, with the full picture in front of you ✨

DOESN’T HAVE TO

There is power in allowing labour to begin spontaneously.

I experienced spontaneous labour with all three of my daughters. Three completely different births — intense, powerful and incredible in their own ways.

My first daughter arrived at 42+1.

In today’s maternity climate, that can sound almost radical.

As women approach 40 and 41 weeks, even as early as 39 weeks, the conversation can quickly shift from:

“How are you feeling?”

to:

“When are we booking your induction?”

Induction can absolutely be medically indicated. But it is also an intervention, and women deserve more than simply hearing:

“Your risk increases.”

They deserve to know:

By how much? From what to what? What does that mean for me and my baby? What are the benefits and risks of induction? What are my options if I choose to wait?

When mother and baby are well, there are real reasons why a woman may choose to wait for spontaneous labour. It can avoid the medications and procedures required to initiate labour, reduce the risk of medication-induced uterine hyperstimulation, and allow greater freedom around where and how you birth.

And importantly:

An estimated due date is not an expiry date.

An offer is not an instruction.

You have the right to ask questions, request absolute rather than relative risk, discuss expectant management and monitoring, ask for time, and decline induction after considering the information given to you.

For some women, induction will feel like the right decision. For others, waiting for spontaneous labour will feel right.

Informed consent means understanding the evidence, alternatives, benefits and risks — and being supported in making your decision.

Your body.
Your baby.
Your birth.
Your choice. 🤎

One of my favourite parts of being a doula is feeding mamas 🤎

Postpartum is a time for rest, recovery and deep nourishment. Your body has grown and birthed a baby — it deserves to be cared for too.

I love preparing warm, comforting, Ayurvedic-inspired food using beautiful spices such as turmeric, cumin, ginger, and fenugreek. Spices traditionally used to support digestion, bring warmth to the body and add anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich goodness to nourishing meals.

Think warming dals, broths, gently spiced vegetables, rice and nourishing bowls — food that is easy to eat, comforting and made with love ✨

Because postpartum care shouldn’t only be about caring for the new baby.

We need to mother the mother, too 🤎

ON CALL 🤎

What does being “on call” as a doula actually mean?

For me, it means my phone is now on 24/7 for my client, and I’m ready to support them through whatever these final weeks bring.

It might be a message before a consultant appointment to talk through their options and how they’d like to advocate for themselves.

It might be an excited “Eek… I think my waters have released!” 💦

It might be a question about a new sensation, a wobble in confidence, or simply a reassuring check-in when everything suddenly feels very real.

Those last few weeks of pregnancy can be some of the most exciting, nerve-wracking and noisy times — full of anticipation, decisions, questions and “is this it?!” moments.

Being on call means you don’t have to navigate all of that alone.

I’m here for the questions, the wobbles, the excitement, the middle-of-the-night messages… and eventually, that very special call that says:

“I think it’s time.” 🥰

And I’m here for it all.

Birth partners matter 💫

Birth is often remembered as a journey between mother and baby, but the right birth partner can have a profound impact on the experience too.

A great birth partner isn’t there to fix, rescue or take control. They’re there to support, protect, encourage and hold space.

✨ They offer reassurance when confidence wavers.
✨ They provide a calm, steady presence during intense moments.
✨ They advocate for their partner’s wishes when needed.
✨ They help create a safe and comfortable environment.
✨ They offer physical support through touch, movement, massage and comfort measures.
✨ They remind their partner of their strength when the work feels overwhelming.
✨ They listen, observe and respond to what is needed in the moment.
✨ They protect the birth space from unnecessary interruptions and distractions.
✨ They celebrate every step of the journey, no matter how birth unfolds.

The most effective birth partners prepare. They learn about birth, understand their role, and recognise that support is not about having all the answers—it’s about being present.

It’s also important to acknowledge that not everyone feels comfortable in the birth space. Birth can be intense, emotional and unpredictable. If a partner is unable to remain calm, supportive or focused on the birthing woman’s needs, their presence can sometimes add stress rather than reduce it.

Being a great birth partner isn’t about being perfect. It’s about knowing your strengths, recognising your limitations, and ensuring that the birthing woman has the support she needs. Sometimes that means stepping forward. Sometimes it means stepping aside and allowing another support person to take that role.

When a birth partner shows up with love, trust and unwavering support, they become an invaluable part of the birth story.

💛 Tag a birth partner who showed up beautifully during birth.

A change of season 🍂

Spring and summer were beautifully busy, with the privilege of walking alongside some wonderful families as they prepared for birth and welcomed their babies into the world.

Then came August 🌞 a chance to slow down, step away from being on-call for a little while, travel, rest, and soak up some much-needed time with my own family 💕

And now September is here, the school bags are packed, routines are returning, and I’m stepping back into doula life feeling rested, refreshed and ready for the season ahead✨

I have a lovely few months ahead of autumn and winter babies on the horizon, and I’m so looking forward to supporting their families through the weeks and months ahead — preparing, nurturing, advocating, holding space and, eventually, welcoming those tiny new people earthside✨

There’s something rather lovely about beginning a new season of doula work as the seasons themselves begin to change. 🍂✨

Sometimes it’s reminding someone of their strength when they’ve forgotten.
Sometimes it’s capturing a couple take a few moments together 📷 💕
