Well, you could say 'why' about anything and itโs often a case of horses for courses with most things in life. However, as I chat to people about my Yin classes, I realise that lots of people don't know what Yin is or don't get what the benefits are.
When I started practicing with my fave teacher, she offered a Yin class in her schedule. Being honest, I loved her Vinyasa classes so much and I secretly thought โcan Yin really offer me something?โ. I realised I was not being very 'yoga' about it and not heeding to the advice I tell my children, which is 'you can't say you don't like something, unless you have tried it'. So, I tried her class and wow! What a beautiful compliment to a Vinyasa yoga practice but also to a very busy life.
Yin is a cooling and very calming practice, where you might only practice a handful of postures in an hour-long class. The postures are held passively and for much longer, so you get a lovely stretch, but you can pay more attention to the breath and stillness. After my first class, I realised that I felt stretched but in a calm and relaxed way. My mind and body felt reset and I escaped the hecticness of life for a lovely 60 minutes.
I think Yin is very accessible to someone who might be intimidated by a dynamic practice. I like to offer lots of lovely props (bolsters, bricks etc), which makes it a very accessible and supportive practice for anyone to have a go. Knowing all of this, I decided it was something I wanted to offer as a teacher, so I attended a fantastic Yin teacher training with Norman Blair. We had a good deep dive into what Yin can offer for me and my students.
So, now I offer 75-minute class, one Friday a month. Why on a Friday, you might ask. It's a lovely reset from a busy week, it helps you to switch off and kickstart your weekend. If you think that is something you might like, check out my schedule here.
