Even I struggle to sleep when it's this hot 😅

And I've been helping families with sleep for over 30 years.

But if it's hard for us as adults, imagine how difficult it is for babies. Unlike us, they struggle to regulate their body temperature, so when the heat rises, it can be very hard for them! And with an unusually hot Bank Holiday weekend on the way, I know a lot of tired parents are about to have an even harder few nights.

Overheating in babies isn't just uncomfortable; it's also a known risk factor for SIDS. So this really matters!!

I've updated my blog this week with everything I'd tell a parent who called me right now:

✅ How to actually cool a baby's room down (most people get the windows wrong)
✅ What to dress your baby in
✅ How to handle feeds and hydration in the heat
✅ How to protect sleep over a busy Bank Holiday weekend

Stay cool everyone, and if you're up in the night with a hot, unsettled baby, know that it won't last forever 💙

Today’s BBC coverage highlights something I have been increasingly concerned about in my own professional practice for many years.

Infant sleep support has become a rapidly growing industry, yet it remains largely unregulated.

This means parents, often exhausted, vulnerable, and desperate for help, can easily come across advice that is not grounded in clinical training, accountability, or safeguarding frameworks.

As a Registered Health Visitor, my practice is governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and grounded in the Healthy Child Programme. Sleep is never an isolated issue; it is intrinsically linked with infant development, feeding, attachment, and parental wellbeing. It must be understood within this wider context.

In my work supporting families over many years, I have consistently seen how important it is that sleep concerns are assessed holistically, with an understanding of the whole child and the whole family.

What concerns me is that this level of training, accountability, and clinical oversight is not required within much of the wider sleep industry.

At a time when parents are most vulnerable, we have a responsibility to ensure the support they receive is safe, evidence-based, and delivered by appropriately qualified professionals.

Sleep support absolutely has a place, but it must sit within regulated, ethical, and holistic care.

I hope this continued public discussion leads to better clarity, safer guidance, and stronger protection for families.

Imagine your child only sleeping only 4–5 hours a night… for three years.

Many years ago, I was filmed for a programme called My Child Won’t Sleep, supporting a family whose 6-year-old daughter, Megan, simply couldn’t fall asleep before midnight (often closer to 1 am).

For three years, she had been getting only 4–5 hours of sleep a night, and the impact on the whole family was huge.

Working together, we were able to change Megan’s sleep patterns, and she went from just a few hours of sleep to 10½ hours a night.

The difference this made to the whole family was incredible.

And yes… that is me in the video ... just with a very different hairstyle!

Helping exhausted families get their nights back is exactly the work we still do today at Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic.

If your child struggles with sleep, you’re not alone — support is available.

I’d love to know — how long does it usually take your child to fall asleep?

Day 2 delivering our on-line Sleep Workshop for NHS staff from RBKC ☕✨

First coffee break of the day… and yes, it’s very welcome!

Coffee often gets a bad rep in sleep conversations … but timing really is everything.

A morning coffee can be genuinely helpful. It boosts alertness, supports focus, and supports learning (which we definitely need on day 2!).

But here’s the important bit…

Caffeine can stay in your system for around 5 hours and for some people, even longer.

That mid-afternoon pick-me-up could still be circulating at bedtime, just when your brain needs to be winding down.

So enjoy it ☕
Just have it earlier in the day 😊

Melatonin gummies are everywhere right now.
And so are the questions from exhausted parents.

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep–wake cycle.

In the UK, it is prescription-only and is not recommended as a first-line treatment for typical childhood sleep difficulties.

It’s also important to be cautious about products marketed online as “melatonin gummies”.

In the UK, melatonin is prescription-only, and over-the-counter products purchased online may not contain consistent or accurately labelled doses.

If melatonin is being considered, it should always be under medical supervision and regular review.

Medication can have a place in specific cases.
But sleep foundations come first.

For most children, sleep improves when we focus on:

⭐️Their individual sleep need and chronotype
⭐️Bedtime aligned with their natural sleep window
⭐️Strengthening the association between bed and sleep
⭐️A calm, predictable wind-down routine

Sleep isn’t one-size-fits-all.

“Sometimes you don’t realise how bad things have become until they start to get better.”

This review was shared by the parent of a 4 year old, after months of disrupted nights with long bedtimes, frequent night waking and co-sleeping that no longer worked for either of them.

In their words, they were “exhausted and frustrated” and felt they had reached “rock bottom”. They described how, from the very first contact, “a weight lifted”, simply knowing there was someone who could help.

Change did not happen overnight. There was Christmas in the middle, consistency was needed, and the plan was gently adjusted along the way. Gradually, things shifted.

They shared that “within a couple of months, we were both sleeping happily in our own beds all night and waking calm and happy”, and that they now feel “confident and empowered to handle difficult nights when they happen”.

Perhaps the line that stayed with me most was this
“this might sound dramatic, but Mandy has genuinely changed our lives”.

If you are parenting a young child and sleep has started to affect your energy, patience and relationship, support really can make a difference.

If you would like help with your child’s sleep, you are very welcome to get in touch.

If your child wakes at 5am, the day can already feel half over before it has really begun.

By 9am you may feel like you have lived a whole day already. Breakfast done. TV negotiated. Everyone else still asleep.

Early rising can be exhausting and you are not alone.

Years ago, before I worked in sleep, my own son was an early riser. It went on for three years and at the time it felt relentless.

I questioned myself constantly and wondered what I was missing.

What I now understand, both personally and professionally, is that early morning waking is rarely simple. It is often influenced by a child’s natural body clock, their individual sleep needs, daytime sleep, early morning hunger, or how they fall asleep in the first place.

The most important first step is not changing everything. It is understanding why your child is waking early.

With the right understanding, mornings can feel more manageable again, giving you clarity about the changes that will best support your child’s sleep.

I have just written a blog exploring the different causes of early rising and why understanding the cause matters. You can read it via the link in my bio.
