NHS Pays for Unlicensed Cannabis Treatment for the First Time

Two years ago, Billy Caldwell was one of the reasons why cannabis-based medicine became legal in the UK. The National Health Service (NHS) has agreed to pay for his unlicensed epilepsy treatment for the first time. This gives hope to other patients with epilepsy or other pain causing conditions.

In 2018, Billy and his mother were coming home from Canada, where the boy has received cannabis treatment. According to his mom, Charlotte, Billy felt incredible improvement, as his severe seizures drastically decreased. While coming back to the UK, the treatment was seized by the Border Force. This caused Billy to have a seizure which sent him to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

This incident became the beginning of the legalization process for cannabis based medicine in the UK. On November 1, 2018 the treatment became legal, bringing relief to hundreds of suffering patients.

This time, the NHS sets a great precedent by funding Billy’s treatment.

Great news - from now on, UK companies producing medicinal cannabis will be allowed to float on the London Stock Exchange. The same decision has been made for the foreign companies, but with one complication - they will need to acquire persimmon from the UK Home Office. This is done in order to control the growth of recreational cannabis, which, while being legal in some countries, stays illegal in the UK.

Medicinal cannabis is one of the fast growing industries today, and this new change will allow the companies to get the attention of investors and conduct the clinical trials faster. As a result, the patients will be able to get their treatment easier.

Until November 2018, cannabis had been classified as a Class B drug that had no redeeming value to society, so very little research into its medical properties existed. In turn, healthcare practitioners (HCPs) had not received any formal education around such medicinal plants.
