The Vaginal Microbiome

Such an evolving topic and one we’re hearing more and more about.

This paper published last year combines results of several studies and these were the findings.

This study was around fertility treatment (eg IVF), but vaginal microbiome is still relevant to those trying to conceive naturally.

I went to The Fertility Show at the weekend and sat in talks with patients with unexplained infertility, recurrent miscarriage, failed IVF rounds and they didn’t know what to do next. They didn’t find answers. For the right person, vaginal microbiome testing could be an avenue to consider.

It’s very encouraging seeing the data being published in this area, and hopefully there will be more to come. And, we’re seeing patterns in clinic now too.

If you want support to explore this area, come book into our clinic and we’d gladly support.

Your nutrient status can meaningfully influence IVF outcomes.

In this study, women with the highest blood levels of folate and vitamin B12 before treatment had higher chances of a live birth through IVF compared to those with the lowest levels.

Highest folate → 1.6x higher chance of live birth
Highest B12 → 2x higher chance of live birth

Importantly, these differences were seen even though most women were not clinically deficient.

This suggests it’s not just about avoiding deficiency, but potentially about achieving a more optimal status going into treatment. This is slightly different to nutrients like vitamin D, where benefits are often most clearly seen when correcting deficiency.

Folate and B12 play important roles in DNA synthesis, cell division, and methylation, processes that support egg quality, embryo development, and implantation.

There’s also evidence linking these nutrients with reduced risk of miscarriage, which ties in with the results we see here about higher live birth rates with higher nutrient levels.

The importance of individual nutrients is often overlooked, but we need to start looking more in this direction...

NAD+ / NMN

A super interesting area of research and one with great potential, but we don’t include it in our default clinic protocols yet due to the infancy of the research but I think we’ll see more and more emerge about this supplement over time as the research continues.

The study I referenced was shared as an abstract at ESHRE last year, but it’s an interesting step in the right direction.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Are you or have you been on a fertility journey and taken it? Fertility nutritionists from other countries, what are your practices? Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts!

Any other topics you want covering let me know! This came from an Instagram request yesterday 🙂

What an interesting paper!

According to the analyses, CoQ10 decreased oocyte (egg) aneuploidy rates by 69% for women over the age of 35.

It’s great to see this kind of research happening. If you want to read in full, the PMID is 41483781

If you want our top picks for supplements including CoEnzyme Q10, comment or DM “Supplement Support” and we’ll send it over!
