How to increase s***m count?

First off, why is s***m count even important? Pregnancy when an egg is successfully fertilised by a s***m. On average there are about 200 million s***m per ej*******on. The journey from the va**na, through the uterus and Fallopian tubes and finally to egg is a tough journey and only the strongest ones survive; therefore having more s***ms equates to a greater chance of a strong s***m successfully reaching and fertilising the egg.

Not to fear - a few tips on how to improve your s***m count and overall fertility:

Eat a balanced diet and consider taking vitamin supplements

Get adequate sleep

Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy BMI

Avoid too much stress

Limit alcohol and drug use

Don't smoke cigarettes

What s*x position is best for getting pregnant?

Everything gets a bit more interesting with s*x. There are tons of information out there claiming certain s*x positions are better others for getting pregnant - could be quite a fun activity for you and your partner to explore all the available options. However, there is no scientific evidence to show that one position is better for conceiving than another. Yes - scientists have actually studied this. S***m can be found in the cervical canal seconds after ej*******on, regardless of position. Although female or**sm may promote s***m transport, there is no known relationship between or**sm and fertility. And if you were hoping a certain practices could bring you a specific gender - that's another myth!

As there's more information available to parents to-be than ever before, trying to conceive can be overwhelming and stressful, so let's not take the fun out of s*x!

What is the difference between natural IVF and regular IVF?

In-vitro fertilisation is a procedure where eggs are extracted from a woman's ovaries (or an egg donor), then fertilised in a lab dish with s***m from a partner or a donor. The fertilised embryo is then placed back into the womb. To extract the egg from a woman's ovaries, typically a round of injections are required to stimulate the ovaries to produce a greater number of eggs compared to a woman's monthly cycle.

Some women may choose natural IVF, which synchronises the egg retrieval process to your monthly cycle avoiding any hormonal injections and risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome. Natural IVF aims to collect only one egg that has been naturally selected and matured by the body. The egg is fertilised outside of the body and once the fertilisation is successful, the embryo is placed back onto the lining of the womb.

There are also intermediary alternatives including mild stimulation IVF which reduces the duration of the injections to just 5-9 days. It's best to consult with your fertility specialist on which procedure is optimal for you and get familiar with the IVF process and the associated costs.

What is the difference between folate and folic acid?

A key ingredient of prenatal vitamins is folate, but not all forms of folate are created equal. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate made in a lab. It’s found in vitamins, and it is also used in fortification of some processed foods. MTHF folate is a food folate that can also be found in prenatal vitamins. MTHF folate can go by many names, such as levomefolic acid, L-5-MTHF, L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, and (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, (6S)-5-MTHF. It's all quite confusing, but they are all the same kind of folate.

MTHF folate is the best option because it can be absorbed and used by your body immediately; whereas folic acid needs to be converted into another form of folate before your body can metabolise it.

Most health professionals recommend a daily intake of 400 micrograms of folate one to three months before conception and 600 micrograms of folate for the duration of pregnancy. While it's possible to consume the required daily intake from food, the absorption of food folate is variable and not guaranteed, it's best to take a prenatal vitamin with MTHF folate to ensure you get the amount your body needs for a healthy baby.

What kinds of folate are you taking?

Should everyone do a fertility assessment?

Yes because knowledge is power. Everyone's fertility healthy and journey will be different, but without an accurate and up to date view on your fertility healthy, it's difficult to make an educated plan. For women, the fertility test, also known as fertility MOT, includes a pelvic ultrasound scan and blood test. The pelvic ultrasound will check for any polyps, fibroids, cysts or other problems likely to affect fertility. The blood test will measure a hormone known as Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), which will give an idea about your ovarian reserve. For men, the fertility MOT includes an analysis of the s***m which examines the density (s***m count), morphology (shape) and mobility of s***m. A normal s***m count would be measured at around 15 million s***m per millilitre of semen.

Together with your fertility specialist, with the results of vital tests, you can make an informed decision about the future - whatever those may be.

Several recent studies have found links between the women’s levels of day-to-day stress and lowered chances of pregnancy. In a large study identifying the relationship between stress and fertility, women whose saliva had high levels of alpha-amylase, an enzyme that marks stress, took 29% longer to get pregnant compared to those who had less. With more scientific data, we are learning stress hormones such as cortisol disrupt signalling between the brain and the ovaries, which can disrupt ovulation.

It's naive to think that individuals won't get frazzled once in a while; however, it's long term stress or prolonged periods of anxiety that can lead wreck havoc to your fertility health and hormone regulation. It's important to consider cognitive behavioural therapy, relaxation methods or natural fertility treatments which has been shown scientifically to help infertile women get pregnant again.

Tired of all the hormones, medicine and invasive procedures? Thankfully, you can boost your baby-making odds via natural, holistic fertility treatments. In this article, find out everything there is to know about natural fertility treatments – from its definition to what’s available, we cover it all.

What types of natural fertility treatments are available?

Traditional Chinese Medicine

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), one of the world's oldest forms of medicine, invisible energy pathways (also known as meridians) run along our bodies. Vital life energy, or 'Qi', is thought to flow along these channels, and anything that disrupts the smooth flow of Qi is said to cause illness.

From a TCM perspective, both male infertility and female infertility are caused by an imbalance of Qi in the body, especially in the three organs primarily responsible for reproduction – the kidney, liver, and spleen. To help rebalance the Qi in the body and, therefore increase your fertility, TCM employs two primary methods. 1) Enhancing fertility with Chinese herbs and 2) Improves fertility with acupuncture.

Relaxation techniques

By now, you’ve probably been told that if you can relax, you will get pregnant. While this is certainly not true for everyone, more and more evidence show that higher levels of stress are associated with lower odds of conception for women. Some techniques to try are: hypnosis, meditation, and yoga.

Diet changes

As it turns out, what you eat can affect your fertility. According to a review of past studies that examined the impact of diet on fertility, researchers from Harvard Medical School found that incorporating certain foods in your diet is something you can do to improve your ovulatory function.

But – which, exactly? Well, here are the various vitamins, minerals, and foods linked to positive effects on fertility: Folic acid, Vitamin B12, Omega-3 fatty acids

Research highlights that male infertility affects at least one-third of couples who are struggling to conceive. So, if you've been trying for a baby without success, it could be due to male-factor infertility.

Here are the leading causes of male infertility:

S***m disorders – Issues with producing healthy s***m are the most common causes. S***m may be immature, abnormally shaped, or unable to swim to get to the egg for fertilisation to take place. In some cases, s***m may be made in very low numbers (oligos***mia), or not at all (azoos***mia). S***m disorders can, in turn, be caused by many different conditions, including: infections or inflammatory conditions, hormone imbalances, environmental and lifestyle factors.

Obstruction (blocked tubes) – Anything that blocks the ge***al tract can stop the flow of semen and prevent s***m from ever coming into contact with the egg. Repeated infections, surgery (such as vasectomy), swelling or developmental defects can cause tube blockage.

Erectile dysfunction – A typical result of low testosterone levels, erectile dysfunction refers to trouble getting or maintaining an er****on. The nature of erectile dysfunction makes it difficult – or nearly impossible – to have in*******se and, therefore, fertilisation.

Retrograde ej*******on – This occurs when, at or**sm, the semen is forced back into the bladder rather than through the urethra and out the p***s. Males affected by retrograde ej*******on ej*****te very little to no semen, in turn adversely affecting the chances of s***m meeting with the egg.

Varicoceles – Varicoceles are enlarged veins in the testicle. As they can raise temperature in the testicles, varicoceles can affect the amount or shape of s***m –potentially lowering healthy s***m count.
