💦HEALTHY HYDRATION TIPS!🥤 We’re in for another hot day in the UK🥵 so here’s my advice for healthy hydration. Hope you find it useful!
💦Drinking enough water is essential for our bodies to function properly (after all, we’re made up of 50-80%💧!)
💦Water is lost in urine, sweat & through breathing & needs to be replenished through drinks & food
💦Water has many functions in the body:
- Regulates our temperature
- Transports nutrients in the blood
- Removes waste products in urine (via kidneys) & sweating
- Helps prevent constipation
- Protects organs & tissues
- Lubricates & cushions the joints
❗️Our kidneys play a key role in fluid balance regulation (temporarily excrete less 💦 during dehydration to keep sufficient blood flow to vital organs).
⚠️It’s important dehydration doesn’t last long (build-up of wastes & toxins can cause kidney damage)
✅The Eatwell Guide suggest we drink 6-8 glasses of 💦 a day➡️this amount increases in hot climates☀️, during physically activity🏃🏻♀️ & during diarrhoea/vomiting🤢!
⚠️Thirst is already a sign of dehydration! Tip: drink BEFORE you start feeling thirsty👍🏻
🧐Other signs to look out for: dry mouth, dark colour urine (& not much of it), dizziness, loss of concentration/appetite, irritability, headache🤯
🥤Recommended drinks for hydration:
- Water (healthiest choice✔️)
- Tea/coffee (best unsweetened & in moderate amounts)
- Milk/milk replacements (low fat)
- Fruit juices/smoothies (max 150ml/day due to sugar content & lack of fibre)
- Soft drinks (without added sugar)
- Sports drinks (only with high intensity training)
👀Alcohol doesn’t count towards our daily water intake!
🍉Most hydrating foods (20% of 💧comes from food):
- Fruits/veg with high water content: watermelon, strawberries, melon, cucumber, celery, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, pak choi, broccoli
- Foods with added water: soups & stews🍵
🤗Tips for drinking more water:
- Carry around a water bottle
- Order water with meals
- Have your 5-a-day
- Add a citrus🍋 to your water for taste
- Set a reminder on your 📱 to drink every hour & track your intake via app
- Drink first thing in the morning & before bed
