On Friday, in the lovely London sunshine, we had our official launch event!

The day brought together clinicians, researchers, innovators, and healthcare leaders to discuss the future of AI in prenatal ultrasound and maternity care.

The event highlighted not only the launch of , but also the importance of collaboration between clinical practice, research, patient engagement, and technology innovation to responsibly introduce AI into real-world healthcare settings.

A sincere thank you to all of our outstanding speakers for sharing their expertise and perspectives, and to everyone who attended both in person and online for contributing to such engaging conversations and discussions around the future of AI-assisted prenatal screening!

Last week, we recruited our first participant at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust 🎉
This is another amazing milestone for the Fraiya Study, and a great achievement for those based at the site. Thank you to the Lewisham team and everyone who helped set up the trial here.
To all our participants so far, thank you! You're helping us understand how AI-assisted tools can support sonographers and improve care for families across the NHS.

The Fraiya Team have been out and about, visiting Fetal Medicine specialists and fellows at the UCLH - University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Fetal Medicine Unit this week.

They delivered an educational workshop to demonstrate FraiyaScan in real time, to allow the hospital team to see how Fraiya supports sonographers during the mid-trimester anomaly scan.

A huge thank you to the team at UCLH!

We know the term "AI" can make you feel a bit uncertain, especially in pregnancy.

So here's what AI does NOT do in the Fraiya Study 👇

❌ It doesn't replace your sonographer
❌ It doesn't change your appointment
❌ It doesn't make decisions about your care

What does it do? It works quietly in the background, supporting your clinical team during your routine scan. That's it.

Got a question? Want to know more? We'd love to hear from you! Get in touch using the contact details on our page 💬📞📧

Ever wondered what it's actually like to take part in the FRAIYA study? Here's a look. 👀
Your 20-week anomaly scan stays completely unchanged. Same team. Same room. Same scan you'd have had anyway.
What's different is that, if you choose to take part, an AI-assisted tool may be working alongside your sonographer quietly in the background, helping to support clinical accuracy. Your sonographer sees everything. They're always in control. The AI doesn't make decisions. It supports the people who do.
If you've been invited to take part in FRAIYA, we hope this gives you a better sense of what to expect. And if you've got questions, message us via Whatsapp! 💙

🎉Incredible day today! 🎉We’re proud to share that we officially welcomed one of our first patients enrolled in The Fraiya Study today in Women’s Ultrasound at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Thank you to the entire team and Dr. Surabhi Nanda for their tireless efforts to take this significant step forward.

The Fraiya Study will help demonstrate how AI can support sonographers in delivering more consistent, efficient, and high-quality prenatal ultrasound care by:

- Helping sonographers capture and measure scan images more efficiently.
- Allowing independent experts to double-check scans remotely.
- Using additional AI software on saved images, to help identify more conditions earlier during the double-check of scans

A huge thank you to the incredible clinical and Fraiya Ultrasound team whose dedication and collaboration are making this possible. This work is helping shape the future of pregnancy care.

This is just the beginning! More UK sites to start their Fraiya Study soon!

If you are booked to have your 20-week scan at GSTT soon, you can read more about the study on our website: thefraiyastudy.org

Like it or hate it, every ultrasound scan needs a healthy blob of ultrasound gel to get good images. But why? And, what’s in it?
Why? Believe it or not air is a terrible ‘conductor’ of sound. Ok, so it travels pretty fast (at about 330 metres per second!), but think of a thunderstorm and how much sooner you see the lightning before you hear the thunderclap. Underwater, sound travels much faster at about 1500 metres per second. To get a good image we need all those precious sound waves to get back to the ultrasound probe as quickly as possible!
What’s in ultrasound gel? You guessed it – lot’s of water! It also has a substance called propylene glycol (a bit like gloopy, oil-free synthetic Vaseline), which thickens it up so it doesn’t fall off your bump. It’s made from hypoallergenic ingredients, so it is very safe to use on your skin. It also washes out easily from clothing (sonographers end up covered in the stuff by the end of a day in clinic!).
And there you go – that’s why you need jelly on your belly for an ultrasound scan…imho it’s a bit more tolerable if it’s warm!
