๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธAnd Iโ€™m here to tell you how heard has transformed the way I think about noise!

๐Ÿคฏ Firstly, my mind was blown when I learnt that one of the biggest things we can do to protect our brain health (and prevent diseases like dementia) is to look after our hearing!

๐Ÿง๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Thanks to Iโ€™m now super aware of the loud sounds around me and carry my ear plugs on my key ring, meaning I can whip them out whenever I need to.

๐ŸŽถ For example, I wear them at gym classes, concerts and even the cinema.

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธI know what youโ€™re thinkingโ€ฆ how are you supposed to enjoy the music and hear the film and gym instructor?

๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป but earplugs only take the edge off loud noises and make them safe, they donโ€™t take away from the experience.

๐Ÿ”‘ Iโ€™d definitely recommend getting a pair of reusable earplugs that have a container you can put on your keys.

๐Ÿ˜…This has been a game changer for me as I know that theyโ€™re always to hand whenever the need arises!

๐Ÿง So, is hearing loss just a normal part of ageing? ๐Ÿง

Some degree of hearing loss happens to everyone as they age. ๐Ÿง“๐Ÿผ

Not all hearing loss is normal though, and some hearing loss can be prevented. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Noise induced hearing loss is the number one cause of hearing loss, and this type of hearing loss can be prevented by:

๐ŸŽง Wearing hearing protection in loud environments

๐Ÿ‘€ Being aware of noises in your environment

๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ Knowing which noises are loud enough to damage your hearing

๐ŸŽถ Turning the volume down to max 60% volume when listening to music on your headphones

๐Ÿ”Š Distancing yourself from the source of noise i.e. a speaker at a party

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธProtecting your hearing is more than just protecting your ears from loud noise ๐Ÿซ

โ™ฅ๏ธ Healthy lifestyle habits that are good for your heart, are also good for your hearing as the delicate structures in the ear need nutrients and oxygen from blood supply to stay alive

๐Ÿฅ High blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are all associated with higher risk of hearing loss, therefore itโ€™s important to get your hearing checked regularly if you have any of these conditions.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€โš•๏ธ Always speak to your healthcare professional when managing these conditions.

โœจ Meet our Co-Founder, Miriam โœจ

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ โ€˜After running this account for 5 months, I thought I would reintroduce myself.

๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™€๏ธ Together with Bridget, our brand extraordinaire, we set up heard back in February to educate the masses about the importance of hearing health, with a focus on raising awareness around the ear brain connection.

๐Ÿ’• Heard is our passion project ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“It all started back in 2020 when I was undertaking a Masterโ€™s at Kings College London where I specialised in โ€˜Dementia Preventionโ€™.

๐Ÿง  It was here I discovered that untreated hearing loss is the biggest risk for dementia that we can do something about.

๐Ÿฆป๐Ÿผ And that treating hearing loss with hearing aidsโ€ฆ or better yet, preventing it in the first place may help to mitigate that risk.

๐Ÿ˜ฎAnd the crazy thing is, nobody knows about it.

โค๏ธ The benefits of looking after your hearing go waaaay beyond brain health, however.

๐Ÿซ‚ Looking after your hearing can positively impact every part of your life including your mental health, your relationships with loved ones, your work life and your physical health.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ Weโ€™ve since grown an expert team to help keep you up to date with the latest research and advice.

๐Ÿ˜ So join the heard community and help us to spread the word and make hearing health heard.โ€™

๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿฝ You heard it hear first ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿฝ

We know that there is a link between untreated hearing loss and dementia, but why is this the case?

๐Ÿง  The mechanisms behind why this link exists remain unclear.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ Professor Frank Lin from John Hopkins University outlines the above three mechanisms that scientists believe may be responsible, however.

๐Ÿฆป๐Ÿผ Treating hearing loss with hearing aids or other devices may help to reduce the impact of each of the 3 mechanisms.

๐Ÿง๐Ÿผ The first step to addressing hearing loss is to take a hearing test.

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป So take hearing test (link in bio) to check your hearing today!

๐Ÿซ– Itโ€™s as quick as making a cup of tea!

Meet Professor Sarah Bauermeister, one of heardโ€™s brain health experts from the University of Oxford. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿซ

Sheโ€™s referring to a 2020 study (1) that suggests that up to 8% of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed if hearing loss was addressed. ๐Ÿฆป๐Ÿผ

Say whaaat!! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

The positive impacts of hearing aid use go beyond reducing dementia risks associated with hearing loss, however. Their use can indirectly impact 6 other key risk factors as well such as:

๐Ÿง  traumatic brain injury (3%)
๐Ÿ˜” depression (4%)
๐Ÿšน social isolation (4%)
๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ physical inactivity (2%)
๐Ÿ” obesity (1%)
๐Ÿš diabetes (1%)

Tune in tomorrow to find out more about why untreated hearing loss and dementia are linked ๐Ÿ‘€

Do you know the facts about hearing loss and dementia? ๐Ÿง

Tag someone in the comments who needs to know! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Please note, the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline is principally in relation to people with age-related hearing loss that comes on slowly over time. There is no evidence to suggest that the risk of dementia is greater in the deaf community or those who use British Sign Language.

๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿผ HEARING AND DEVELOPMENT ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿฝ Hearing plays an essential role in communication, speech and language development, and learning.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿซ Even a small amount of hearing loss can have profound, negative effects on speech, language comprehension, communication, classroom learning, and social development.

๐Ÿ“š Studies indicate that without proper intervention, children with mild to moderate hearing loss, on average, do not perform as well in school as children with no hearing loss.

๐Ÿ‘ฑ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธThis gap in academic achievement widens as students progress through school.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Being conscious of your childโ€™s hearing is particularly important given that 12.5% of 6โ€“19 years have suffered permanent damage to their hearing from excessive noise exposure ()

๐Ÿฅ So if you suspect your child may have hearing loss, contact your GP at first opportunity and get their hearing checked!
