What does meaningful engagement with communities actually look like?

Black women in the UK face significantly worse maternity outcomes than white women, including higher rates of pregnancy-related deaths, preterm birth and stillbirth. Yet Black women remain underrepresented in the maternity and neonatal research that could help us understand and address these inequalities.

If research is meant to improve outcomes for Black women, Black women need a real role in shaping that research. Through our work on the NIHR-funded PROMISE study, we helped co-develop a set of Principles of Engagement to involve Black women more inclusively in maternity and neonatal research.

The principles came from what we heard directly from Black women, community representatives and research midwives involved in the study. Community engagement should change how research is done.

Black women in the UK are 2.3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and experience higher rates of preterm birth and stillbirth. Despite this, they remain significantly underrepresented in the and neonatal that could help close that gap.

We helped lead on the PROMISE study, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, shaping the study design, topic guide and workshop plan alongside our community advisory group, and supporting across our networks.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Professor Jason Arday.

His death has raised questions about racism, representation, accountability and who is afforded grace within our institutions.

We need to keep asking whose voices are heard, whose achievements are questioned, and why some people are held to a different standard.

We are thinking of Jason's family, friends, colleagues and students, and all those who have been affected by what has happened.

As of today, the EHRC’s new Code of Practice comes into force.

We’re deeply concerned by this decision and what it means for trans people.

The implications reach far beyond healthcare, affecting access to services, spaces and opportunities. And we know that inequalities do not exist in isolation. When people face greater barriers to inclusion, those barriers can follow them into every part of their lives, including their health and access to care.

We stand firmly with the trans community and with the organisations fighting for trans equality. We fully support the Mass Lobby for Trans Equality on 9 September.

It's published! 🎉

A few years back, we supported research examining how ethnicity data should actually be collected, handled and reported in UK clinical trials.

Our role was making sure underserved ethnic communities shaped this research from the very beginning. We connected the study with three community partners

That work just came out in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine: 13 recommendations for how clinical trials should collect, handle and report ethnicity data.

We use AI ourselves, and it genuinely speeds things up, so this isn't us being precious about the tech itself. 👀

What's stuck with us is something we keep hearing over and over, in listening sessions, from community partners, in pretty much every conversation we've had about AI in health lately: it can end up making the same inequalities worse if nobody's paying close attention to what it's actually learning from.

Somewhere in the back of our minds while we made this video was a question we still don't have a good answer to, which is what the government actually plans to do about that risk, rather than just assume it works itself out.

What are people's thoughts on this? We'd love to know. 🗣
