Everything is made up of Yin~Yang energy ☯️

We find it so easy to accept some of these dualities such as-
Moon ~ Sun
Night ~ Day
Dark ~ Light
Feminine ~ Masculine
Slow ~ Fast
Hot ~ Cold
Sleep ~ Awake
Light ~ Dark
Down ~ Up
Soft ~ Hard

But then we seem to find it harder to accept the deeper sides of other dualities such as -
Rich ~ Poor
Comfort ~ Discomfort
Easy ~ Hard
Healthy ~ Sick
Love ~ Hate
Happy ~ Sad
Positive ~ Negative
Laughter ~ Tears
Highs ~ Lows
Freedom ~ Control
Courage ~ Fear
Abundance ~ Scarcity
Life ~ Death

We have a culture of toxic positivity, of highlight reels & of suppressing and pushing down heavier emotions ,a societal pressure of soldiering on & not speaking about how we feel & putting on a brave face when these deeper & harder things happen in life.

What if we can sit in the discomfort of the darkness, the shadows, the tough times, the sorrow, the pain, the sadness, the fear, the negativity and not allow it to overcome us but to feel it, learn from it, to see its message, to understand its meaning, to embrace it & allow it to pass, to know that there is an opposing energy that we can also embrace & invite & wait for, that we can find the duality in any circumstance and know that one thing is not true or certain or fixed or forever? 🕉️

We have two branches of the nervous system for a reason, they both have their job and are both needed for us to stay alert & alive and to recover & thrive, so it isn’t about being in a fixed state of one branch but being to swing from one to another when needed.

Most of us due to the stresses of modern living and our fast paced lives, are mostly always in a stimulated energy, in the sympathetic dominant branch of our nervous system of flight & flight, producing stimulating & stress response chemicals and so we find it hard to relax, to switch off and sit still - I see this a lot as a health coach and yin teacher.

Our nervous system tends to like the familiar feeling of where it spends the most time and so this is why people experience feelings of burn out, exhaustion, insomnia, IBS & anxiety.

We have to actively put work into the practices that help our nervous system to swing into its rest & digest, the para-sympathetic branch, and we can actually do that in many simple & easy ways.

The more stress that we have in our lives or the more fast paced that our lives are without making time to focus on the things that balance this forwards, doing, producing & achieving energy out, the lower the tone of our vagus nerve tends to be, making it harder for us to feel a sense of safety, security, grounding & rest in our bodies.

The vagus nerve is a key player in our PNS and in helping our HRV (heart rate variability) to increase. The higher our HRV , the easier we find it to recover from stressful situations and to ease back into feelings of regulation & calm.

Here are some examples of simple practices that you can use to stimulate & increase the tone of the vagus nerve, these are tools that you can easily do without anyone even noticing when anxiety rises & stressful situations happen or they can be longer more intentional, mindful practices that you can make time for as part of your self care habits each week 🫶🏻
