In Conversation with Anne Battye - Alexander Technique restored her Life

In this conversation I speak with Anne Battye, senior Alexander Technique teacher based in London.
Anne spent the first seven years of her life in India as a 'child of the Raj' — constantly moving between Rajput palaces, Gond villages, ancient monuments and jungle landscapes. That early immersion in so many worlds gave her both a rich store of vivid impressions and a lifelong curiosity that would eventually draw her to the Alexander Technique.
Her encounter with the work came in the early 1960s, after a serious car crash in East Africa left her with muscular spasms affecting her ability to speak, walk and write. She found her way to Dr and Mrs Barlow — both trained by F.M. Alexander himself — and began a recovery that made it clear this work would be central to her life.
In this conversation, Anne traces the arc of a remarkable career: qualifying with the Barlows and then staying on for twelve years as an assistant deepened her understanding of the underlying principles. For eighteen years she worked at RADA with actors who are now household names; and a rich private practice drawing clients from every walk of life. She also describes her work for STAT in its early years, chairing the Training Course committee and establishing the Moderation system for new graduates.
Throughout, what shines is Anne's conviction that Alexander himself was above all a practical man — and that the real heart of this work lies in teaching the principles of Inhibition and Direction through direct, lived experience.
