Early detection, men's health and your GP

Recorded live at Goodman's Fields Health Centre in Whitechapel on World Prostate Cancer Day, this episode of Taking Control of Cancer goes straight to the heart of why early diagnosis matters and why too many men are still not getting the care they need.

Host Steve Bland speaks with Dr Toby Lambeth, GP and Health Inequalities Lead at Operose Health, about the barriers that stop men from coming forward, what to do if you're worried about symptoms, and the local work underway to make cancer services more accessible for everyone.

Dr Lambeth also explains how multilingual animated videos are helping to improve screening uptake across north east London, and why the free HPV vaccine is still available for 18 to 25 year olds who missed it at school.

💜 The impact of World Cancer Day extends far beyond a single day.

This year’s campaign saw more than 600 stories shared through text, video and artwork, bringing the total number of stories featured on the World Cancer Day website to 1,215. These personal experiences continue to shine a light on the realities of living with and beyond cancer.

Alongside this, millions of people engaged with campaign content around the world, helping to challenge stigma, promote awareness and ensure that the voices of people affected by cancer remain at the heart of the conversation.

📢 Know the signs of lung cancer - rozpoznaj objawy raka płuc.

That’s Monika’s message from [@]hopec_london.

When Monika’s father went for what should have been a routine occupational screening after a long career in construction, no one expected it to lead to a lung cancer diagnosis.

Now, she’s sharing her father’s story to help people in Polish and Eastern European communities recognise workplace risks, take persistent symptoms seriously and get checked early.

🌞 "I’ve heard that before... but is it actually true?"

Many of us have grown up hearing advice about tanning, sunshine and skin protection. Some of those messages are based on evidence. Others have become myths that continue to circulate despite what the science tells us.

In this episode, our guests explore why health misinformation spreads so easily, how social media influences attitudes towards tanning, and what everyone can do to better protect themselves from skin cancer. It's an honest and informative conversation that could change the way you think about sun safety.
