Before a laser session (hair removal and laser skin rejuvenation) the prep is mostly about protecting your skin and reducing irritation. Here are 5 common things to do beforehand:
1. Avoid sun exposure
Stay out of direct sun and avoid tanning beds/self-tanner for about 1–2 weeks before treatment. Tanned or sunburned skin increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.
2. Stop waxing or plucking
For laser hair removal especially, avoid waxing, threading, or tweezing for about 4 weeks beforehand. Shaving is usually okay because the laser needs the hair root intact.
3. Shave the treatment area 12-24 hours before the appointment. Don’t leave long stubble unless your provider specifically says otherwise.
4. Pause irritating skincare products
Avoid strong actives like retinoids, exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs), benzoyl peroxide, or harsh scrubs for several days before treatment, depending on the procedure.
5. Arrive with clean skin
Skip makeup, deodorant, lotion, perfume, oils, or sunscreen on the treatment area unless told otherwise. Clean skin helps reduce irritation and improves laser effectiveness.
