A surgeon recently posted telling cancer patients to avoid vegan diets and intuitive eating. I responded in the comments - but I want to give this more of an explanation.

Surgeons and oncologists do life-saving work. 🫢🏻
This is not about their value or their intelligence.
This is about scope of practice.

Specific public diet prescriptions for cancer patients - without individual context, without nutritional training, with a large audience who will act on it - causes real harm. Patients restrict unnecessarily.
They feel confused.
They feel scared.
I know this for a fact because I see it every week in clinic. 😒

A vegan diet can be completely nutritionally adequate during cancer treatment with the right support.

Intuitive eating is something many cancer patients work hard to rebuild after treatment ends.

As for keto - that's a whole separate conversation and it deserves its own post. Watch this space. πŸ‘€

Nutrition advice for cancer patients should come from specialists who have trained specifically in this area - not as a side note to a surgical career.
I say this with respect.

We all have a role, and can, and should be working together to support patients.

If you're confused by conflicting nutrition advice during or after cancer treatment - that's exactly what we're here for.

From bloated daily to happily eating pizza - here's how πŸ‘‡πŸ»

She'd already cut out gluten, was avoiding whole food groups, and was scared to eat out. Nothing was working.

We didn't restrict more.

We increased her fibre (with the right types), worked on the gut-brain connection, and rebuilt her confidence with food gradually.

A few months later she messaged me to say she'd been out for pizza - normal pizza, not gluten-free - and nothing happened.

That's what specialist gut health support actually looks like. Not a longer list of foods to avoid. A life where food stops being frightening.

If this sounds familiar - comment CONSULT or book via the link in bio. Our specialist team is here. πŸ’š

If you've cut out beans, lentils and chickpeas because of bloating - this might be the most useful thing you read today.

Legumes are one of the best sources of prebiotic fibre your gut bacteria thrive on. Cutting them out long term isn't just unnecessary for most people - it's actually working against your gut health.

Here's what's really going on when beans cause symptoms:

It's not that you can't tolerate them. It's that your gut bacteria aren't used to them yet - or you're eating too much too soon, or combining them with other high FODMAP foods in the same meal without realising.

This is called FODMAP stacking. And it's one of the most common things I see in clinic.

The solution isn't no legumes. It's low and slow - starting with smaller portions, choosing lower FODMAP varieties like canned lentils or beans rinsed well, and building tolerance gradually.

The gut-brain connection matters here too. Stress and anxiety around food can amplify symptoms regardless of what you're eating. Which means sometimes the fear of beans is doing as much damage as the beans themselves.

This is exactly the kind of thing we work through with patients at Green Light Nutrition - building your food confidence back up, expanding your diet, and getting to the bottom of what's actually going on.

3 things that change when you work with a cancer dietitian.

1️⃣
The fear around food goes first. Most patients arrive convinced that every meal is either helping or hurting their cancer. That's an exhausting way to live - and for most people, it's based on advice that isn't evidence-based.

2️⃣
Then energy improves. Not because of a miracle food. Because eating enough, with the right balance, gives your body what it needs to get through treatment.

3️⃣
And then - the one I hear most often - patients say they finally feel like someone is in their corner. A specialist who knows their diagnosis, knows their treatment, and has built something specifically for them.

Protein is important but fibre may save your life.

Increasing fibre in your diet can reduce your risk of bowel cancer.

Don't spend hundreds on a GI Map test. Do this instead πŸ‘‡

If you've been struggling with gut symptoms for years and feel like you've tried everything, expensive tests aren't the answer, they're taking you in the wrong direction.

There's a lot we can do, for a lot less money.

Food, fibre, meal patterns, the gut brain connection, sleep - they're backed by solid evidence to support digestive symptoms and conditions like IBS.

If you're ready to actually get to the bottom of your symptoms, this is what I help people do every day in my online clinic.

This can sort out your sh*t πŸ’©

Comment P**P and I'll send you the exact method to try.

There's no one size fits all - there are people out there struggling with πŸ’© that need more than just a quick fix like this.

For many though, this one simple addition to your day can be a game changer whether your poops are a bit loose or not coming out much at all.

This is psyllium husk powder mixed with elderberry juice.
(Any juice would do)

⚠️
We don't want to shock the gut by going in with loads.
Increase the amount slowly over a few weeks.
Then keep consistent for at least 4 weeks to see the results.

πŸ’¦ Without enough hydration it can cause symptoms.
πŸ’¦ Drink with the fibre as well as throughout the day.

A blended mix of nuts and seeds - it sounds simple, and it is.

But here's what's actually happening when you add a spoonful to your day. πŸ‘‡πŸ»

Every nut has a unique fatty acid profile.
Every seed brings something different - fibre, lignans, plant protein, minerals.

When you blend them together you're not just getting one benefit, you're stacking several at once.

For your gut this matters because diversity of plant foods drives diversity of gut bacteria - and that's one of the most consistent findings in gut health research right now. The more varied your plant intake, the better for your microbiome.

I add this to porridge, yoghurt, smoothies, or just straight off the spoon sprinkled onto a dish. I also make my granola with it.
No recipe needed. No thinking required.
One jar. Multiple plants. Every single day.

β€” I recommend FieldDoctor meals to my patients and here's why.

Firstly, you don't NEED to buy these.
You can use them for inspiration for recipes.

But if you're post breast cancer diagnosis, there's a range.
If you have coeliac disease, there's a range.
If you have IBS and need low FODMAP, there's a range.

No additives, no preservatives, no stabilisers.

Properly balanced meals with protein, fibre and healthy fats, that completely take the thinking out of eating well.
