The Neuroscience of Periods and PMS is an online talk with Dr. EmilÄ— RadytÄ— covering what happens in the brain across the menstrual cycle, why PMS experiences vary so widely between women, and what the science now understands about the brain-cycle connection. Two hours. Plain language. No prior knowledge needed.

Women with PCOS have double the prevalence of dementia compared to controls, with diagnosis arriving 19 years earlier on average. The pattern holds across menopause and primary ovarian insufficiency too.

A 2025 review in Endocrinology by Valera, Chen, and Grive at Brown University suggests the reason extends beyond estrogen loss.

FSH and LH, the hormones that rise when ovarian function declines, appear to act on the brain in ways that accelerate aging and have been largely overlooked in current treatment approaches.

2,800 days. That is the estimated lifetime burden of severe premenstrual experiences for a person with PMDD, calculated by Rapkin and Winer (2009).

Research by Beddig, Reinhard, and Kuehner (2019) found that the brain’s stress response system works differently in women with PMDD across the entire cycle, with a distinct amplification during the luteal phase.

The data also showed a cycle-independent link between stress and rumination that extends the mental load well beyond two weeks.

PMDD Awareness Month is coming to an end but we will still be here afterwards providing new research and trying to help women with neurostimulation. Check Nettle™ and Lutea™ on our website. Link in bio!

When the data points somewhere unexpected, you pay attention. Ieva Karvelytė, our Research and Data Manager, shares what surprised her most about the research on Nettle™ and how many women’s quality of life could be improved.

PMDD rarely shows up alone. Ieva Karvelytė, our Research and Data Manager, explains why so many women don’t realize they have it, and how often it presents alongside other conditions. Around 38% of participants who thought they had PMS may have had something else entirely.

Have you been told it’s just PMS? Tell us below.
