Adoption & hair?
Well yes. My adoption has totally shaped me. So when I think about sharing this post… on my personal page or on the brand, I figured they’re actually very linked.
Hair, identity and adoption. All reasons I started Shedid & Parrish.
I recently met up with a small group of adoptees. Adults who’d been adopted as children and a few who’d gone on to adopt themselves.
Adoption isn’t really something we talk about much. It’s not taboo per sé but we just don’t seem to acknowledge it.
What was fascinating was how different our experiences and stories were and yet how many similarities there were particularly in our behaviours.
There’s been a transition since I was adopted back in the late 70’s from only hearing the voice of the adopter to starting to hear the voice of the adoptee.
There is a misconception that adoption starts and ends with either the placement into a family or until you become an adult and leave the family home, by which time the adoption was something that happened in the past but has no baring on the person now and going forward into their future.
The truth is I don’t think enough is really understood about adoption and the significant impact it can have.
For me, it is integral to my whole life. It has influenced my journey thus far, who I am, how I identify and how I see the world (and how the world sees me).
That is personal but also powerful. Of course I am more than my adoption but I am very much who I am because of it.
I’d love for us to talk more about adoption as a situation, en experience and what it means for those involved in the journey.
Do you have an adoption story? Has adoption touched your life in some way? I’d love to hear more stories and get a deeper understanding so that we can help improve the journey for those getting started.
