Knowing your rights is half the battle. Knowing how and what to do when they’re ignore is the other half.
As a Deaf NHS Nurse I’ve seen these standards fail Deaf patients (also as a patient myself) firsthand. This is your guide to fighting back and for healthcare professionals, your reminder that this is not optional.

Save this and share it with someone who needs it.

Are you a healthcare professional? Drop a comment and tell me one thing that your service does well for Deaf patients. Let’s share good practice too 🧡

I spent the weekend in Lisbon. I came home £100 poorer because I’m Deaf.

I was recently implanted with a cochlear implant and spent the whole weekend with lots of active listening, my listening fatigue was on the brink. I had no mental energy left.

I can’t hear announcements. No display screens showing live updates. Just a mad rush of people getting on and off the train which left me more confused and anxious.

Multiple attempts to speak to train guards but again I couldn’t hear them. Listening fatigue. I kept being reassured the train would leave, but had no idea when. My phone battery was dying and there was nowhere to charge it.

In the end I got a taxi home.
£100.

That’s what inaccessibility costs. Real money. Real consequences. For something as simple as a working display screen.
Deaf people travel too. We deserve to know what’s happening. 🧡

Has this ever happened to you? Comment below, I want to hear your stories.

Thanks to for getting me home.

Every Deaf patient in the NHS has the legal right to access their own healthcare, but do we get it? No, not always.

The Equality Act 2010 and the Accessible Information Standard exist to protect you. Knowing your rights is only powerful if you actually know them and how to request them.

Swipe through, save this and share it with every Deaf/HOH and healthcare professional.

Share your story in the comments about accessing your healthcare (positive or negative) so healthcare professionals can read your comments and understand the impact it has on you.

And I still show up. Imagine what Deaf professionals could do if the system actually supported us properly! Being a Deaf nurse changes how you see everything. The missing gaps and assumptions where the system just wasn’t built for us. I’m not here to be quiet about it. Drop a 🧡 if you want more of this.

Save this and share it with someone
who needs to see it.

Cochlear implant journey update.

There has been a lot of big changes and adjustments this month- I am hearing lots of new sounds that I have not heard for decades. It is exhausting and I am sleeping a lot more than usual. Im still finding close family and friends a struggle to understand but it is getting better each day. I’m taking it one day at a time

If you have any questions about my CI I’m happy to answer them 🧡

As some of you may know, if you have been following me for a few years, I underwent assessments for CI and was approved in 2024. It has been a very long process and not an easy one. So I have been given a surgery date and I have big bags of emotions, including feeling nervous and excited. I’m happy to talk more about it if you have any questions about the CI
