Completing my first Hyrox relay last month got me thinking about something I find fascinating…
We often associate athletes with being the picture of health, but research has found that endurance athletes can have surprisingly high rates of dental problems, including tooth wear, decay and gum disease.
Why?
🥤 Frequent sports drinks and gels
😮 Mouth breathing during exercise
💧 Reduced saliva during prolonged training
🍬 Frequent carbohydrate intake
As someone with a background in restorative dentistry and clinical nutrition, I love exploring where these two worlds overlap. Looking after your teeth is part of looking after your performance.
Some advice?
🚰Hydrate with water when carbohydrate replacement isn’t required.
💦Consider rinsing with water after sports drinks or gels.
💪🏼Fuel according to the demands of training.
🍬Avoid unnecessary snacking on sugary foods outside exercise. 🏃🏽♀️
