This one mineral is critical for your immune system, your hormones, your skin, and your mental health — and a huge proportion of people are quietly deficient in it.
Zinc is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions and is critical for immune defence, wound healing, testosterone production, thyroid function, skin repair, and cognitive sharpness. Your body can't store it, so you need it consistently from food or supplements.
Deficiency is incredibly common especially in vegetarians and vegans, because the zinc in plant foods is bound to phytates that block absorption. Signs of low zinc include frequent colds, slow wound healing, hair thinning, loss of smell or taste, acne, and low mood. The best food sources are oysters by a mile, followed by red meat, pumpkin seeds, and shellfish.
If supplementing, zinc bisglycinate or picolinate are the most absorbable forms.
Don't take it on an empty stomach and if you supplement long term, balance it with a small amount of copper.
