We visited Wales for Easter and even though we ate plenty, we also walked a lot. Nearly 50’000 steps in two days!

When your everyday life is balanced and healthy, going on holidays has an extra treat to it; eating all types of food you don’t normally eat.

You may not always find a place to train, so it’s always good to try and move as much as you can. It helps with keeping your weight in check and to help digestion. Often we end up eating food that we don’t normally eat, and moving more has been shown to really make a difference.

After planning, half the battle is won.

Habits can only develop if you reduce the friction between you and them.

Same applies to habits you want to get rid of. Increase the friction. Such as for example not having sugary snacks easily accessible.

A warm up is very important. Not only to avoid injury (and believe me it really does!) but also to actually effectively train your muscles.

Do you ever find that your best set is the second or third one? Usually not the first. Even with a proper warm up it still takes time to really get the temperature and blood flowing into the various tissues.

Give your body that time. Rushing into your training and skipping the warm-up is not respecting your body’s needs to prepare. Not only for weight training. This includes cardio. Going for a jog without warm-up is playing with fire. Knee pain, back pain and all other problems can come from that. And a bad first mile.

A final note, warm up ≠ static stretching please! It’s an active movement.

I usually tell clients not to eat pasta very often, since most people are trying to get leaner. But it’s a very quick and tasty meal. If you have kids you know they all love it. Often it’s really the only option.

So, here’s what I’ve been doing for a long time that makes a difference when eating something as delicious but carby as pasta:

It’s simple in theory and harder to do.

Most people have short bursts of healthy habits lasting a few weeks or months.

The January motivation or the few weeks before going on holidays.

A lot of people struggle to maintain a good and healthy lifestyle throughout the year.

The only people who manage are usually the ones whose job is actually fitness. And a few others of course.

The reality is that to be in good shape and healthy you don’t need to make it too difficult.

Just learn to do the basics well and with consistency.

Become a master of the basics of physical health which are the habits I mentioned above.

Your body will naturally gravitate towards a naturally lean and strong shape as well as huge improvements in mood, hormones, mental focus, energy and so much more.

Client success.
Alistair came to me wanting to get back in shape. As an athletic guy in his early thirties who had a rather sedentary job, he felt he needed help to get back on track.

Training was the first step. With a solid 4-5 day training split he immediately started building muscle. Having some prior fitness experience, he was lifting heavy and his body responded well.

Getting his body fat down was a little harder. The type of definition he achieved on the right side of the photo only happened when he made up his mind to take his nutrition to the next level.

It meant sacrificing some social life and after-work drinks for a more structured and consistent approach to his meals. A bit more planning. A bit more discipline.

For him training was enjoyable, as I remember he referred to it as “downtime”. Almost like a mental and emotional rest from an otherwise high-responsibility job.

What’s the take away?
Take the first step. The one that has the least amount of friction in your life. The one you’re more likely to keep doing.

Then you add more on top of that.

Little by little you build your healthy lifestyle.
