šŸ“– a great book -ACT for Burnout -for anyone struggling with burnout or stress. It gives a lot of helpful information about what burnout is and how is does not only refer to those in busy jobs but also busy parents or carers, sports people or those involved in activism.

It describes different cycles of burnout which may be more relevant to specific individuals and then lots of strategies on how to reconnect with values and look after yourself whilst continuing to engage meaningfully in your work!

Highly recommend!

Anxiety tip! Swipe right āž”ļø
I've been talking about how safety behaviours can be deceptive, making us think we're doing the best we can to manage our anxiety.
Unfortunately they are only a very short- term solution and usually come at a cost to our long-term happiness!
A note effective way of overcoming anxiety is learning how to sit with it! Allowing it to be there without needing to push it away! Then we can focus on doing the things that are imp to us!
Do you have any unhelpful safety behaviours you want to give the boot?

Have you ever done this exercise?
It's quite a common exercise we do to help explore the idea of "controllability of thoughts".

We often have an idea that we have full control over the thoughts that pop in to our minds and that we should be able to stop "bad" thoughts from coming in.
This belief often leaves people feeling distressed when they have difficult thoughts and they might try to push thoughts out of their minds, which is called "thought suppression!"
Thought suppression might work initially but it's definitely not guaranteed to, and people tend to find the more they try to push thoughts away, the more the thoughts come back (with a vengeance)!
This little exercise helps us to see how much we can control what thoughts come in to our mind and also what happens when we try to push the thought away!
The exercise is simple and will only take 30 seconds!
šŸ§˜ā€ā™‚ļø Find somewhere quiet to sit where you will be free from interruptions
ā° Set a timer for 30 seconds
🐘 For the next 30 seconds DO NOT think about a pink elephant
How did you go? What did you notice?

Most people come to therapy saying "I don't want to feel anxious or down any more!"
As a therapist I have to be really careful with how I respond to this. On the one hand of course I hope that the work we do together will lead them to feeling "better" about their lives which may include feeling happier and calmer!
But on the other hand just focusing on reducing difficult emotions such as anxiety and sadness as a goal for therapy would be counterproductive and potentially damaging!
Not wanting to feel difficult feelings or experience difficult thoughts is called Experiential Avoidance. It's like never wanting there to be clouds ā˜ļø in the sky and wherever there was doing anything you could to try and get rid of them even if this was harmful for you in the long-term!
We need a different approach to our emotions which includes
ā™” Acknowldging
ā™” Allowing
ā™” Exploring
ā™” Accepting

The aim is to learn to "be with" our difficult emotions rather than pushing them away! So that if its a cloudy ā›… day we are OK with this because we know that the clouds are just here at the moment and they will move on at some point and it will be sunny again! šŸŒž
