THET (Tropical Health and Education Trust) Working in partnership to support health workers across the world Without such a workforce no country will be able to meet their citizens’ right to health.
(1)

Today, one-in-seven people around the world will never see a qualified health worker in their lives. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the world will need to recruit and train an additional 13 million health workers in the decades to come. THET has been supporting health workers overseas since 1989, improving patient care through targeted training programmes. We work with diverse partners to build a world where everybody has access to affordable and quality healthcare. In the past six years alone, THET has reached over 50,000 health workers across thirty-four countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Last month, the UK House of Lords debated the value of health partnerships.

Our Patron, Lord Crisp, opened the debate. Peers from across the House joined in.

Baroness Prashar said Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET) has "done some excellent work to promote health partnerships."

Replying for the government, the FCDO Minister called our Myanmar programme "a real flagship example of what health partnerships can do." That recognition belongs to the UK health institutions and Myanmar health workers who have kept working together through five years of conflict.

The Minister set out a shift in how the UK works overseas: from donor to investor and from grants to shared expertise. That is what health partnerships do.

Thank you to Lord Crisp and to every partner whose work made GHP worth talking about.

Meet Dr Zedekiah Sibanda 👋

He trained as a doctor in Harare, and for over 20 years he's cared for children in Wales as a Consultant Paediatrician. Every year, he also helps train 10–20 young paediatricians back in Zimbabwe.

"Due to my work in Wales I can offer something that local specialists can't."

He's not alone: 74% of the diaspora health workers we surveyed say their international experience makes their work in the UK better.

This Black History Month, we're celebrating the Experts in Our Midst 💛

Read Dr Sibanda's story 👉 https://www.globalhealthpartnerships.org/voices-of-the-experts-in-our-midst-dr-zedekiah-sibanda-a-diaspora-health-worker-supporting-mental-health-in-zimbabwe/

Dr Zedekiah Sibanda is a Consultant Paediatrician based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital (Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board). Originally from Zimbabwe, Dr Sibanda undertook his medical training in Harare before pursuing post-graduate training in the UK. From 1996, he practiced as a consultant...

It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. Safwan Al-Chalati, who for the last year and a half we were lucky to call our Medical Education Manager in our Syria Programme. Dr. Safwan was a remarkable individual and a symbol of sacrifice and dedication.

Dr Safwan fled the oppression of Assad's regime in Damascus to serve in the field hospitals of Aleppo. It was during this time that he was injured during a hospital strike by the regime, part of their campaign against medical facilities in Northwest Syria.

Despite his injuries and associated consequences, undeterred he continued his inspiring journey. He established the Syrian Board of Medical Specialties (SBOMS) in the areas out of the regime's control, rallying not only all remaining local specialists but also diaspora physicians to train specialist doctors whose education was interrupted. His work resulted in the graduation of at least two thousand specialized doctors, filling critical gaps in medical services.

Following the fall of the regime and the unification of medical boards, we had the privilege of welcoming Dr Safwan to Global Health Partnerships Syria team. The consequences of his injuries led to the deterioration of his health, which worsened in recent months, leading to his passing.

Dr Safwan’s legacy will continue, in the specialist doctors he helped to train, in the expertise he shared and the example of determination and strengthen he embodied. At GHP we will do all we can to honour his legacy in our on-going work .

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all those who knew and cared for him, as so many of us did.

🦠 The Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardships (CwPAMS) is making a significant impact on healthcare in Ghana’s Volta Region! Through a collaborative partnership between Ghana’s University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho Teaching Hospital, and University College London Hospitals NHS Trust, healthcare professionals are being empowered with the skills and knowledge to enhance antimicrobial stewardship and reduce antibiotic misuse.

From establishing a Centre of Excellence to launching the Take-back Unwanted Medicines (TBUM) Programme, these initiatives are helping ensure the responsible use of antibiotics, reducing the risk of antimicrobial resistance, and protecting public health. Read Dr Cornelius Dodoo’s blog to learn more about these efforts! 📚💊 👇
