What does it mean to work in intensive care? And what are the moments that stay with you long after a shift ends?

Introducing In Conversation With, our new series exploring the people, professions and perspectives that shape intensive care.

For our first feature, we meet Jemma Smith, an Occupational Therapist at Bristol Royal Infirmary, and Bethany Wrenn, a Physiotherapist at Royal Papworth Hospital.

From playing football with a patient in an ICU corridor to helping someone stand for the first time after a cardiac arrest, Jemma and Bethany share their different journeys, the challenges of working in intensive care and the people who have shaped their experiences.

💙 Sometimes, three little words mean everything.

For one patient recovering in intensive care, being able to tell his wife "I love you" again was an extraordinary moment.

After weeks without being able to speak, finding his voice meant more than words. It meant reconnecting with someone he loved.

Behind moments like these are Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), whose expertise, compassion and care make an extraordinary difference to patients and their families.

From swimming 24km in Turkey to taking on 24 lengths of butterfly… Katie is giving her 24! 💙

Our very own CEO, Katie, is diving into , and she's certainly not making it easy for herself!

Katie is preparing to take on not one, but TWO challenges between 24 Oct-24 Nov:

💪 24 pull-ups in 24 hours (she can currently do one!)
🏊‍♀️ 96 lengths in the pool - 24 each of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly!

For Katie, the Intensive Care Society is more than just a job. She's taking on these challenges to help raise awareness and vital funds to support the intensive care community.

From 24 October to 24 November, Marie will be running 24km every week, raising money to support the work of the Intensive Care Society.
