⛰️ A huge well done to Frankie who recently completed a massive challenge - fell running to the top of all 30 peaks in the Yorkshire Dales.

💜 This has been a challenge years in the making, and she chose to raise funds for APP as she completed the final summit after having experienced postpartum psychosis after the birth of her first baby.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ She's now written about her experiences for The Fell Runners Association magazine. Read more about her epic adventure here: www.app-network.org/news/fundraising/frankie-completes-yorkshire-fell-running-challenge

🚨 LOCAL CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT! 🚨
A huge congratulations to two of my local constituents, Rachel and James, on completing an incredible fundraising challenge in support of Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP).

After running the London Marathon, they have just completed an 84-mile run along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal between the two Mother & Baby Units that supported Rachel during her recovery from postpartum psychosis after the births of their children, Evelyn and Jude.

Their determination has already helped raise more than £8,000 for APP, a charity that provided vital support to their family and now benefits from Rachel’s work as a Peer Supporter helping other mums.

Thank you also to the fantastic local businesses that donated raffle prizes and to everyone who has supported this fundraising effort.

Rachel and James have turned a deeply personal experience into hope for others. They have made their children, and all of us across Pendle and Clitheroe, proud. Absolute champions! 🏆

🏊 Good luck to APP Trustee Tracey who is taking on the Great North Swim in beautiful Lake Windermere this weekend!

💜 Tracey experienced an episode of postpartum psychosis when she had her first child and later trained as an APP peer supporter and media volunteer before joining the board here at APP.

⛰️ Tracey says: "I'm always looking for ways that I can support APP and am inspired by those who take on physical challenges to raise funds. I was frustrated that joint problems prevent me from joining the big running events but then I noticed the option of this swim event. I'd started some lake swimming last summer and realised it was great for my mental health during perimenopause, when I'm at risk of relapse after my previous episode of postpartum psychosis. This event provides the perfect motivation for me to start outdoor swimming more regularly to benefit my own mental health whilst raising money for an amazing specialist mental health charity."

🫶 We're so excited she's chosen to take on this amazing challenge for us - thank you Tracey and have a great swim! www.justgiving.com/page/tracey-robinson-app-swim

Read our collaborative poem ‘My voice found strength when…’

As part of Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, and the theme ‘A Decade of Voices’, we invited our community to contribute to a collaborative poem using the sentence starter ‘My voice found strength when…’ The poem can be read in full below.

My voice found strength when I found someone who really wanted to listen.
My voice found strength when I found a community who helped me find the words.
My voice found strength when I set my thoughts free from my own mind and shared them with others.
My voice found strength when I met others who had been through it, and understood.
My voice found strength when I realised I wasn’t alone.

My voice found strength when I heard the voices of others.
My voice found strength when I learned I wasn't alone - when the echoes answered back, and I heard my story living in someone else's words.
My voice found strength when I was being advocated for…
My voice found strength when I realised I was no longer paranoid!
My voice found strength when after 2 months of separation from my baby, I was finally told ‘you will get well’ - a glimmer of hope held out to me in Melbury Lodge.

My voice found strength when I stopped questioning my own that was already there, within.
My voice found strength when I went public on television, radio, face-to-face, and print, discussing my lived experience with maternal mental health.
My voice found strength when I realised I wasn’t the only one.
My voice found strength when I followed the voice of my Shepherd.
My voice found strength when I knew there was hope.

My voice found strength when I realised I was not alone in what I went through and that it was not my fault that I got ill.
My voice found strength when I let go of shame.
My voice found strength when I allowed for quiet pauses.
My voice found strength when I realised I wasn’t alone and that what happened was not abnormal.
My voice found strength when I finally understood that what had happened to me wasn’t my fault.
My voice found strength when I crawled out of the clouds of doom and started looking for the stars.

My voice found strength when I rested in solidarity and accepted none of this was mine or anyone’s fault.
My voice found strength when I found courage to share my story with others.
My voice found strength when I started to use it to let other mothers struggling know there will be brighter days again.
My voice found strength when I could stop blaming myself and start using my experience to help others.
“Try to leave the painful memories behind and look forward to your future life!”
My voice found strength when we shared our most vulnerable moments and in solidarity we realised we’ve been to hell and back and here now we sit smiling wide with open hearts, tender to support each other.

My voice found strength when someone thanked me for healing loudly, so we don’t lose others in the silence.
My voice found strength when I realised I had made it through.
My voice found strength when I dared to let myself be loved again.
My voice found strength when I could choose self love over fear.
My voice found strength when I felt seen and heard as a woman and as a Mother.
My voice found strength when I started to believe I was a good Mama.
My voice found strength when you showed me I was your mother.

Join our wellbeing event: Matrescence workshop with Maggie Gordon-Walker.

APP is running a special wellbeing workshop for people who have experienced psychosis in the perinatal period. The session will focus on becoming a mother, known as matrescence, and how understanding it can help you.

In this 1.5hr session on Thursday 25th June, Maggie Gordon-Walker, founder of Mothers Uncovered and advocate for maternal mental health, will explain some of the changes that matrescence can bring. Then, using written prompts and guided discussion, we will explore some of those changes that you have experienced.
