College of Contemporary Health

College of Contemporary Health Evidence-Based Training for Healthcare Professionals in Obesity Care, Digital Health & Behaviour Change Skills. We concentrate on evidence-based learning.

At the College of Contemporary Health (CCH), we are passionate about developing and delivering accessible online healthcare programmes, focused on obesity care and weight management, digital health, and behaviour change. Science, and a problem-centred learning approach, are the key components of all of our courses. This allows our learners to develop practical skills that can be applied in real-wo

rld scenarios. The curriculum for our courses is overseen by our outstanding Academic Advisory Board, comprised of the most influential voices in their respective fields; all of whom are at the cutting edge of both research and clinical practice and this knowledge is reflected in CCH courses. In 2016, CCH's postgraduate qualifications were validated; this reflects the academic rigour and robust nature of all of our courses.

A new review of randomised controlled trials found that medications do not harm male hormones, sexual function or ***mquality after long-term use, and in some cases appear to improve them.

In men with and weight-related low , treating the underlying excess weight and poor may naturally restore hormone levels while preserving fertility โ€“ potentially offering an alternative to testosterone replacement therapy.

The findings are encouraging but preliminary; with only five eligible trials and varying results, the research team stresses that larger, better-designed studies are still required.

GLP-1 medications do not harm male fertility and may improve testosterone and s***m quality in men with obesity, a new review of clinical trials suggests.

Most patients on weight-loss jabs are not being asked what they actually eat.

Fewer than half get any dietary advice after starting.

Why is that just one sign of a bigger blind spot in GLP-1RA care? Because the patient who is losing weight looks like a success โ€“ so the questions about muscle loss, low mood and when to bring in extra help go unasked.

Those questions are what our new course is about.

Itโ€™s practical, not theoretical, with three reference tools to keep.

This is the third course in our GLP-1RA series โ€“ after how the drugs work, and how to prescribe them safely โ€“ and the one our learners kept asking for.

An online course created for the GPs, nurses, pharmacists and dietitians who see these patients week to week.

Early access is open now. Full launch on Tuesday 16 June.

It is tempting to assume that as the weight comes off, people naturally become more active.

New findings suggest the opposite may be closer to the truth.

Adults with who were losing weight on glucagon-like peptide-1 ( ) receptor agonist medications significantly reduced their physical activity, according to a study being presented on Saturday at , the Endocrine Societyโ€™s annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

That matters because activity is one of the main safeguards against an unwanted side effect of these treatments.

GLP-1 receptor agonists such as , liraglutide, dulaglutide and reduce not only fat but also lean muscle mass.

This makes essential for preserving strength and long-term health, according to study lead Sajana Maharjan, M.D., of HSHS St. Johnโ€™s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.

New research links GLP-1 medications and physical activity, finding that people with obesity take fewer steps and exercise less after starting treatment.

A once-weekly injection that works through three hormone pathways at the same time could deliver substantial reductions in both blood sugar and body weight for people with type 2 , according to phase 3 trial results.

People taking part in the trial who received weekly injections over 40 weeks lost more than four times as much weight as those given a placebo, while their average reduction in long-term blood sugar (HbA1c) was more than twice that seen in the placebo group.

Retatrutide is described as a triple-hormone drug because it mimics three gut hormones that help regulate appetite, blood sugar and metabolism: , GIP and glucagon.

This sets it apart from several medications already in use.

Drugs such as and primarily target the GLP-1 pathway to suppress appetite, while combines GLP-1 with GIP to help control blood-sugar levels.

Retatrutide goes a step further by also engaging the glucagon receptor, which is thought to help increase energy expenditure.

A new triple-hormone injection, retatrutide, helped people with type 2 diabetes lose far more weight than placebo in a phase 3 trial, while improving blood sugar.

The toughest questions in a GLP-1RA consultation often come months in, once a patient is well established.

A recent review published in the journal Current Obesity Reports (Springer Nature) suggests that fathers shape their childrenโ€™s risk of obesity through multiple interacting pathways that begin before conception.

The authors argue that efforts to prevent and study should focus on fathers as well as mothers.

Childhood continues to rise in the United States, alongside increasing rates of overweight and obesity among adults.

Current projections suggest that more than 250 million Americans could be living with overweight or obesity by 2050.

Research shows that children are more likely to develop obesity when one or both parents are affected, and the risk is highest when both parents have obesity.

This pattern reflects the complex interplay of , biological, behavioural, and environmental factors that influence obesity risk across generations.

A review finds fathers influence childhood obesity risk before conception, through s***m, habits, and environment โ€“ not mothers alone.

How much weight someone loses has long been the headline measure of whether treatment is working.

A new scientific statement from the American Heart Association, published in Circulation, makes the case that this measure misses much of what actually does.

Movement, the statement argues, reshapes cardiovascular and in ways that a set of weighing scales will never register.

Obesity may change how early-stage breast cancer becomes invasive, according to a study by The University of Oklahoma researchers published in The American Journal of Pathology.

Obesity is already recognised as a risk factor for invasive , but researchers have not fully understood how it helps early, non-invasive breast lesions develop into invasive .

A clearer picture of this process could strengthen physiciansโ€™ ability to predict and treat the disease.

In the study, breast cancers in women without displayed the typical signs of turning invasive, including rapid cell division and an increased ability to invade neighbouring tissue.

In women with obesity, however, the researchers identified a different set of biological changes that appeared to help the cancer become invasive.

The cancer environment became more inflamed, with the arrival of immune cells that advanced the growth of the tumour.

The tumour cells also appeared better able to survive under stress, and there were changes in cellular metabolism โ€“ how the cells use nutrients for energy.

New research suggests obesity may reshape how breast cancer turns invasive, driving progression through inflammation, immune cells and a key enzyme.

A new framework that recommends as few as one to three ingredient swaps can make everyday meals meaningfully more nutritious and less expensive.

That is the central finding of a study published on 28 May in the open-access journal PLOS Digital Health by PhD student Trevor Chan and Professor of Computer Science Ilias Tagkopoulos of the UC Davis.

The challenge the researchers set out to tackle is a familiar one.

The dietary guidelines that help reduce peopleโ€™s risk of conditions such as and are well established, yet turning that into day-to-day meals remains difficult for most people.

Many existing diet recommendation tools ask people to change too much all at once, which can lead to practices that are hard to sustain or leave people unsure how to put the advice into action.

AI identifies just one to three ingredient swaps that make meals healthier and up to a third cheaper, a UC Davis study finds โ€“ no full diet overhaul needed.

A weekly dose of (2.4 mg) leads to a clinically significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) and related health outcomes in young adults living with severe who are resistant to treatment following hospital-based, non-pharmacological obesity care during childhood.

That is the finding of a randomised controlled trial being presented at this yearโ€™s European Congress on Obesity ( ).

The study, led by researchers from the Kรธbenhavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen and Holbรฆk Hospital in Denmark, highlights the importance of identifying as early as possible the children who are resistant to hospital-based obesity care and who may benefit from the timely addition of semaglutide or other glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists ( ).

Semaglutide and other GLP-1 RAs work by mimicking naturally produced incretin hormones.

These hormones help to lower blood sugar levels after a meal and reduce appetite, prompting people to eat less.

A trial finds weekly semaglutide cut BMI by 19 per cent in young adults with severe, treatment-resistant obesity, improving fat levels and metabolic health.
