I was diagnosed with mild idiopathic scoliosis as a teenager, when, as a student of ballet and other dances, I began to experience a collection of musculoskeletal pains and other symptoms, many of which continue to this day. My Alexander training helped eliminate what was once my worst pain - behind my right shoulder - altogether, and other pains that had me close to despair in my early twenties reduced dramatically. Years of practice, experimentation and enquiry have helped me manage my condition well. A diagnosis of fibromyalgia was illuminating, leading me to explore new findings in chronic pain research. Now I am much less troubled by discomfort. Still, my pain persists, even though my scoliosis is very mild. I feel for those much worse affected, and with far fewer resources to meet that deep suffering. Life’s twists and turns can be hard.
Today is International Scoliosis Awareness Day.
We are sending Love and support to everyone affected by Scoliosis.
