May is Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) Awareness Month. 💙
Fibromuscular Dysplasia is a rare condition that affects the walls of the arteries, causing them to become narrowed, twisted, or weakened.
It can lead to serious complications such as artery dissections, aneurysms, stroke, and high blood pressure.
Common symptoms may include:
• Headaches or migraines
• Neck pain
• Pulsatile tinnitus (a whooshing sound in the ears)
• Dizziness
• Visual changes
• High blood pressure
• Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or stroke
FMD is often difficult to diagnose because many symptoms are nonspecific.
I was lucky that I had an MRI scheduled on the same day when I had the dissection. After my carotid artery dissection, TIA and Horner Syndrome in Thailand 🇹🇭 I got the diagnosis of FMD thanks to the Uniklinik in Göttingen 🇩🇪 This helped me better understand what had happened. There now also seems to be an explanation for my chronic neck pain and migraines I suffered years back.
By sharing information, we can help raise awareness and support earlier diagnosis for others.
