71% of patients in a recent BLOOM⁴³ survey told us they felt mentally unprepared for surgery.

For many people preparing for breast surgery, the weeks beforehand can feel overwhelming. Questions around recovery, complications, body image, logistics, and what to expect are often accompanied by anxiety and uncertainty, yet this part of the surgical journey remains under-supported.

At BLOOM⁴³, we are focused on improving how patients prepare physically and psychologically before surgery through our Prehab™ platform.

By combining supraphysiological preconditioning™ with digital patient education and recovery support, our goal is to help patients feel more informed, more confident, and better prepared going into surgery.

Six years ago, was preparing for a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery

Like many patients, she felt overwhelmed and anxious in the lead up to surgery, and did not feel like she had been given clear, practical guidance on how to physically or mentally prepare beforehand.

That experience is one of the reasons Carly became such a passionate advocate for BLOOM⁴³ and the importance of Prehab™.

At BLOOM⁴³, we believe preparing for surgery should start before the operating room. Through supraphysiological preconditioning™ and evidence-based digital support, the BLOOM⁴³ platform is designed to help patients feel more informed, more empowered, and better prepared ahead of breast surgery.

At BLOOM⁴³, we believe patient education is a key part of Prehab™ 📖

One of the first steps to preparing for surgery starts with understanding your risks. Not to create fear, but to help patients feel informed, empowered, and able to make confident decisions about their care.

Understanding the stress surgery places on the body can also help patients better prepare both mentally and physically through other Prehab™ steps, including optimizing nutrition, seeking support, and improving overall wellbeing before surgery.

In this clip, Dr discusses some of the factors that can increase the risk of complications after breast surgery, and why optimizing your health before surgery can play an important role in recovery.

Download the free BLOOM⁴³ app today to explore evidence-based resources designed to help you feel more informed, more prepared, and better supported before surgery.

Changes to the body after breast surgery can affect more than just how you look, they can shape confidence, identity, and how you feel about yourself and your relationships 🥺

Feeling “like yourself” again doesn’t always happen at the same pace as physical healing. For many people, it takes time to adjust, to grieve what’s changed, and to redefine what intimacy, confidence, and self-love mean now.

This carousel shares insights from an article on our free BLOOM⁴³ Prehab™ app 📲

This article was written by Zoe Yessaian, COSRT Registered Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist and founder of . Itching can be a normal part of recovery after breast surgery, and may happen as your body heals, reacts to dressings or adhesives, or adjusts to medications used during and after surgery [recovery heart emoji]

You might notice:
- Localized itching around the incision site or under dressings
- A scratchy, tingling, or crawling sensation
- Dry, irritated, or sensitive skin
- Widespread itching across larger areas of the body

Itching is often most noticeable in the first few weeks after surgery as incisions heal or the body reacts to medications, dressings, or environmental factors.

Some simple things that may help include:
💧 Staying hydrated
🧴 Using approved moisturizers or anti-itch creams if recommended by your surgeon
🚫 Avoiding scratching the area
🩹 Speaking to your surgical team if you think dressings or adhesives may be irritating your skin

However, you should seek medical advice if you notice:
- Severe or worsening itching
- Redness, swelling, or discharge near the surgical site
- Symptoms that do not improve with treatment
- Widespread itching with rash, hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing

This information comes from an in-app symptom navigator article written by Dr Hadyn Kankam MA (Cantab.) MB BChir MRes MRCS. You can explore more evidence-based resources like this on the free BLOOM⁴³ Prehab™ app.

Looking after your scar is an important part of recovery ❤️‍🩹

In this clip, Laura Jane Powell (.pixel.nurse), Advdanced Nurse Practitioner & BLOOM⁴³ app contributor shares simple, practical ways to support good scar health, including when to start using products and why hydration plays such an important role.

One of the key things to remember is that scar care should only begin once the wound has fully healed, something your surgical team can guide you on.

From there, maintaining moisture in the skin can help support healthy healing and improve how your scar feels over time.

Three things I wish I could go back and tell myself before my double mastectomy and DIEP flap surgery...

1️⃣ You are not having a b**b job. A mastectomy is an amputation of all of your breast tissue. You are going through a huge body change, and it is okay to feel that grief. Let yourself feel all of it.

2️⃣ Increase your protein before surgery to help improve your healing outcomes.

3️⃣ Develop your core and leg strength to help your recovery post DIEP flap surgery. This surgery limits your mobility for a couple of weeks post op, and having that extra strength will help make getting back to your normal habits smoother.

Looking back, these are small things that could have helped me feel more prepared going into such a big procedure both mentally and physically.

If you are preparing for surgery, I hope this helps in some way 🤍
