If you’ve been told to “eat well” before breast surgery but don’t know what that actually means, this is a helpful place to start 🥗

Laura Powell (.pixie.nuse), Plastic Surgery Nurse Specialist and BLOOM⁴³ contributor, explains why protein matters for healing, but also why calories and hydration matter just as much, especially if your appetite drops.

Sometimes it’s less about perfect nutrition and more about eating little and often, and choosing foods you’ll actually manage.

There’s more expert guidance like this on the free BLOOM⁴³ Prehab™ app.

Receiving information about breast surgery can feel overwhelming 😥

You’re often trying to process a new diagnosis, understand different treatment options, ask the right questions, and make important decisions – all whilst sitting in a consultation room where emotions can understandably run high. It’s no surprise that many people leave appointments struggling to remember everything that was discussed.

This is one of the reasons we created the BLOOM⁴³ Prehab™ app.

Within the app, you’ll find evidence-based resources, just like this video by , designed to help you revisit conversations in your own time, including guidance on different types of breast surgery, what to expect before and after your procedure, potential risks and complications, and practical advice to support your recovery.

Fever and chills can happen after breast surgery and may be part of your body's normal healing response. However, they can also be a sign of a more serious issue, such as an infection, so it's important to know what to look out for ❤️‍🩹

You might notice:
• An elevated temperature (above 38°C / 100.4°F)
• Shivering or shaking
• Feeling unusually hot, even in a cool room
• Alternating between feeling very cold and very hot
• Fatigue, muscle aches, or a general feeling of being unwell

A low-grade fever in the first 24–48 hours after surgery can be a normal part of recovery. However, fever and chills that develop later, especially after a few days, may indicate an infection or another complication.

Possible causes can include:
🦠 Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
🫁 Pneumonia
🩸 Blood clots
💊 Medication side effects

You should seek medical advice if you experience:
• A fever above 38°C (100.4°F) that persists or worsens
• Chills accompanied by shaking, confusion, or difficulty breathing
• Fever and chills with redness, swelling, or discharge at the surgical site
• Chest pain, leg swelling, or a rapid heartbeat
• Any symptoms that make you feel very unwell

This information comes from an in-app symptom navigator article written by Dr Hadyn Kankam. You can explore more evidence-based resources like this on the free BLOOM⁴³ Prehab™ app.

If you’re anything like , accepting help doesn’t always come naturally.

Many of us are used to being the ones who manage everything, keep going, and reassure everyone else that we’re “fine.” But preparing for and recovering from breast surgery is not something you have to do alone.

Whether it’s someone driving you to appointments, cooking a meal, helping with the school run, or simply checking in on you, saying “yes” to support can make a real difference.

In this clip, Carly shares one of the biggest lessons she learned from her double mastectomy: if people offer to help, let them 💙

What you eat before surgery matters 🥗

Good nutrition can play an important role in helping the body prepare for surgery and support recovery afterwards. But many patients are never given clear guidance on where to start.

This Healthy Eating Week, we’re highlighting some of the nutrition and wellbeing resources available on the free BLOOM⁴³ app, including content from app contributors Hillary Wright (), Registered Dietitian, author, Director of Nutrition at Boston IVF’s Wellness Center, Women’s Health Nutrition Specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, alongside resources from Advanced Plastic Surgery Nurse, Laura Jane Powell (.pixel.nurse).

Together, these resources are designed to help patients feel more informed, supported, and prepared in the lead up to surgery through practical, evidence-based guidance.

Healing doesn’t always look like progress every single day...

Some days you’ll feel strong and other days you’ll feel exhausted, emotional, uncomfortable, or like your body needs more rest than usual. That doesn’t mean you’re falling behind.

Recovery after breast surgery is not about “bouncing back"", it’s about giving your body and mind the time, support, and patience they need to heal 💙
