🧠 “I get these awful bouts of lower back pain…”

Can you guess the remedy? 👀

Last week’s answer: Silica! How many of you identified our frail-looking patient from her symptoms? 👀

This week, our patient is a slightly overweight man in his late forties. He has a ruddy complexion and seems quite good natured in a somewhat effusive way:

“I get these awful bouts of lower back pain, which sometimes develop into sciatica.”

“They come on suddenly, and are absolutely crippling – any and every movement is agony – even a cough is unbearable.”

“I can't lie on my back, the direct pressure is too much, and if I sit for too long, sometimes I can't stand up again.”

“I suppose the right side is slightly worse, though frankly it's not easy to be sure – the pain just merges, and sometimes my back just feels broken!”

“I do get pretty crabby when the pain kicks in, and lose my patience quite easily – that's not a good time to pick a quarrel with me!”

🤔 So… what do you think?

Can you identify the remedy from the symptoms?

This August, we’re highlighting Kali phosphoricum (Kali phos).

Traditionally associated with mental fatigue, physical exhaustion, stress, overwork and nervous exhaustion, Kali phos is often considered when someone feels completely drained by prolonged mental or emotional pressure.

It may be associated with brain fog, poor concentration, headaches, irritability, low mood and disturbed sleep, particularly when the mind has been working overtime and it feels impossible to switch off.

That feeling of being mentally and physically depleted after sustained pressure is a key part of the Kali phos picture.

As with all homeopathic prescribing, remedies are selected according to the individual’s unique symptom picture, rather than a diagnosis alone.

💛 Have you ever felt completely exhausted after a prolonged period of stress or mental effort?

🧠 “I think I might be losing my marbles…”

Can you guess the remedy? 👀

Last week's answer: Cocculus indicus! How many of you identified our patient from her symptoms? And the eagle-eyed visitors to our socials would have seen that Cocculus was July's Remedy of the Month! 👀

This week, we're back with another patient story rather than using repertory language.

Today's patient is a frail-looking female in her early seventies, who looks almost malnourished:

"I'm beginning to think I might be losing my marbles – I'm getting quite absent-minded. I open the fridge and forget why I went there in the first place, I set the cooking timer and forget to switch it on, and I've even managed to add sugar to a savoury dish I was preparing, instead of salt. It's getting worse."

"I'm also exhausted most of the time – everything is such an effort, and even during this warm spell, I still feel chilly unless I'm roasting in the direct sun, though I have to be careful because I burn so easily."

"My family say I can be a bit obsessive. I just like to do things properly. After all, who is to say whether something is important or not – it's all relative, and small things do matter, least-ways to me!"

"Unpleasant things on the news really upset me – I can't watch, or even listen."

"Sometimes, when things get too much for me, I just have to crawl into bed and bury myself under the covers until I warm right through. I usually feel much better after that, and my brain kicks back into gear!"

🧠 Monday Brain Stretch

Last week's answer: Lycopodium!

Pretty well everyone identified our patient from the symptoms described. There were some good observations and answers!

This week, we're back with another patient story rather than using repertory language. Today's patient is a slender, slightly frail-looking female in her mid-fifties:

"I'm not really sure what's going on with my health anymore. I've had various tests, but everything shows up as normal, so there's nothing 'officially' wrong with me."

"I nursed my mother through her last months of terminal cancer, so things were pretty stressful at the time, and there were lots of nights of broken sleep. I haven't really been able to fall into a proper, deep sleep since, and that was two years ago."

"I get various, undefined digestive symptoms with quite a bit of nausea and light-headedness – sometimes I end up retching, but only bring up a bit of sticky saliva."

"I can get stomach-cramps after eating, but the worse cramps can happen at night when I just seem to fill with gas and farting doesn't help – it feels as if my abdomen is full of sharp objects and I just can't get comfortable."

"It's the bouts of lightheadedness that bothers me most – I often feel as if I'm on the edge of fainting – a bit like having one glass of w**e too many, but without the pleasure of drinking it – it's almost stupefying!"

🧠 Monday Brain Stretch

Last week's answer: Pulsatilla! Many of you quickly recognised the 'type' from the symptoms described by her mother.

This week's Brain Stretch continues our patient-story approach rather than using repertory language.

Today's patient is a good-looking, confident man in his late forties:

"I'm here because my wife has told me it is high time I sought professional help. I think she's exaggerating a bit, because basically I feel fine, but then again, when one reaches a certain age maybe it's time to check things out. It's probably better to face minor niggles before they become something more serious."

"I had a renal colic a couple of months ago. It was excruciatingly painful. I felt this pain in my back before p*eing, and had to really strain before managing to pass a small amount of bloody p*e – once passed, the pain eased. My p*e felt really hot – it was horrible!"

"My digestion is OK mostly, though sometimes if I'm a bit stressed, I find that I feel full quite quickly, even if I haven't eaten very much. Oh, and I can get really sleepy after eating, so I try to do something physically active to get me going again!"

"Well, everyone gets stressed from time to time – that's normal isn't it? I avoid conflict if I can. After all, what's the point of it? If it's a situation involving someone I care about, such as my wife or family, I don't want to upset them. If it's a work colleague or someone I'm engaged with on a professional level, I honestly don't need an altercation. I know what I'm doing, and I don't need to prove myself to anyone."

🧠 Monday Brain Stretch

Last week's answer: Bothrops Lanceolatus!

Many of you recognised the symptoms as belonging to the snake family, but this time the correct remedy was one of the lesser-known snake venoms.

This week's Brain Stretch continues our patient-story approach rather than using repertory language.

Today's patient is a little girl, and her mother does the talking:

• "She gets frequent middle ear infections which usually start at night. They're quite painful, and finish up by exuding greenish yellow gunk which doesn't smell."

• "These ear infections can follow on from swimming, or can come on after a cold – she gets quite a lot of those."

• "Her colds are always worse at night because her nose gets really blocked. Lying down definitely makes things worse, so does getting too warm."

• "She loves sweets, ice-cream and cheese, but rich or fatty foods can end up giving her a headache or indigestion."

• "She's generally a sweet and easy-going child, but can get quite emotional and tearful at times, especially if she doesn't get her own way. A reassuring cuddle generally helps to calm things down."
