The British Pain Society

The British Pain Society An alliance of professionals advancing the understanding and management of pain for the benefit of patients. This is not our official website.

The British Pain Society aims to promote education, training, research and development in all fields of pain. It endeavours to increase both professional and public awareness of the prevalence of pain and the facilities that are available for its management. The Society is involved in all aspects of pain and its management through the work of the Council, various Committees, Special Interest Group

s and Working Parties and via its publications, Annual Scientific Meeting and educational seminars. The British Pain Society has a membership of over 1,200 and is involved in all aspects of pain and its management through the work of the Council, Committees and Working Parties. This is a social site where we share current articles, papers and blogs about pain awareness, pain treatments and pain management. By sharing these posts we are not endorsing their content, indeed some may very well be controversial, but would like to invite you to join the conversation because we believe it is NOT a pain to talk about pain. Sharing is caring and more knowledge and information helps everyone.

This Pain Awareness Month, weโ€™re starting something new: the British Pain Society Themed Year on AI, Technology and Innovation in Pain Management. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ก

Over the next 12 months weโ€™ll dive into:

AI, digital tools, wearables and remote monitoring

How tech can personalise treatment and support self-management

The important stuff too: governance, bias, privacy, equity and trust

Youโ€™ll see themed Pain News, podcasts, webinars, interviews and workshops โ€” and our Expert Patient and Carer Committee will lead a monthly discussion so patient voices sit alongside clinical and research perspectives.

Come join us and help shape what better, safer, more equitable pain care looks like:

โ—๏ธYou Don't Have to Face Pain Alone

Pain is common โ€“ talking about it isnโ€™t. Letโ€™s change that.

Living with Chronic or long-term pain can sometimes feel isolating, but support is available, and you don't have to manage it on your own.

Connecting with others who understand what you're going through can provide reassurance, practical advice and confidence. Getting support early can help you stay active, stay connected, maintain your wellbeing and prevent things from becoming more difficult.

๐ŸŒ World PT Day | 8 September 2026
This yearโ€™s theme: Cardiovascular Disease & Stroke

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death globally, claiming more than 20.5 million lives every year.
And the opportunity to prevent and reduce its impact is huge.

1 in 4 people will have a stroke in their lifetime.
Regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of CVD and stroke.
Almost all strokes can be prevented.

Just 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week, can reduce stroke risk by around 25%.

Physiotherapists play a vital role in turning this evidence into action.

From cardiac rehabilitation and personalised exercise programmes to stroke rehabilitation and supporting long-term physical activity, physiotherapists help people:

โ€ข Move more safely and confidently
โ€ข Manage cardiovascular risk factors and long-term conditions
โ€ข Reduce the risk of further cardiovascular events
โ€ข Regain function, independence and quality of life after stroke
โ€ข Build physical activity into everyday life

For people living with cardiovascular disease or recovering from stroke, physiotherapy isn't simply about movement - it's about helping people live well, stay independent and participate in the things that matter to them.

Today, we recognise the contribution of physiotherapists to prevention, rehabilitation and healthier lives worldwide.

Happy World PT Day!

๐ŸŒ Global Pain Awareness Month | September 2026

What works for us might work for you

One of the most effective interventional innovations in recent years has been the role of patient advocates and mentors. It's often the input of those with lived experience, combined with enlightened clinical expertise, that brings about real change in people's lives.

While chronic pain may not entirely disappear, we can learn to better manage it. Throughout September, our Expert Patient and Carer Committee (EPCC) has been sharing their top tips for living well with pain.

What is Chronic Pain?

Pain is common โ€“ talking about it isnโ€™t. Letโ€™s change that.

Chronic pain (also known as persistent or long-term pain) affects around 38% of people in Scotland, yet many people still find it difficult to talk about.

Itโ€™s a recognised health condition that continues beyond normal healing time and can affect every aspect of daily life โ€“ from work and relationships to sleep, mood and confidence.

Understanding pain is an important step towards managing it.

The more we learn about what is happening in our bodies, the more empowered we can feel to take positive steps forward.

๐Ÿ“ข EFIC 2027 workshop submissions are open

Do you have an idea for a workshop for in Glasgow?

The deadline for workshop submissions is 7 September 2026 - and there will be no late-breaking workshop submission period.

This is an opportunity to bring together new research, different perspectives and practical learning from across the pain community.

Three workshop formats are available:

๐Ÿ”น Topical workshops โ€“ presenting linked basic, translational or clinical research

๐Ÿ”น Debate workshops โ€“ exploring areas of differing views, uncertainty or emerging hypotheses

๐Ÿ”น Demonstration workshops โ€“ providing an interactive or visual educational experience, with a clear practical demonstration element

is built around the framework Building Bridges in Pain: Thriving Through Communication.

The theme is intended to support how ideas are framed and communicated โ€” not to restrict the scientific topics that can be proposed.
