How persistent neck reflexes can have an effect on your child’s function?

Gaining and getting control of movements is a gradual process from the time of birth. All babies when born have very limited control of their body. They would not be able to lift their head up, reach for a toy or move their body as they want to. Mother nature provided them with some reflexes called Primitive Reflexes to initially help them with their movements.
Primitive Reflexes: With each head or neck movements, the body will respond by moving arms and legs in a particular pattern, Eg: with rotation of head to one side, the arm and the leg on that side extend and those on the other side bend; Lifting head up causes arm extension and leg to bend.

As brain matures, the baby gains more control of the arms, legs and body and do not need these reflexes any more. For some children, these reflexes still persist causing future problems with their functions. Eg: if a child sitting at a table bends their head, the legs would straighten up and prevent him to sit properly; If they rotate head to the side where they are writing, the arm would extend not letting them to relax the arm enough to write properly.

Many often, teachers or parents do not recognise these difficulties and blame the child for not behaving well.

Lookout for more detailed information regarding each neck reflexes in my upcoming Posts.
